The following two songs, Albreda's Balm and Redeemer's Pride, will no longer give out exp unless you are in combat.

This was after what I felt was a very good suggestion from some other bards. If you find they still are handing out exp outside combat, or if you find they aren't handing out any at all, please contact me at dr-rowan@play.net

Or post something here :)

Okay, I will disagree :) And I think I did goof. Rage of the Clans should probably be the other combat-only one.

The major reason I did this is because the Balm was never intended to be sung while you were sitting on your bottom in the guild. I don't like walking into the guild and seeing half the members calmed and the other half resisting. Sorry.

The change is going to stay. It was thought out, and it's sound to me.

<<Anybody ever tried asking a bard-related question on Prodigy?>>

I could never get onto prodigy from work, and the software didn't work on my computer at home. In addition, at the time I was wrangling the AOL boards and the Genie boards as well as working on just about everything in DR, not to mention restoring characters and answering the mail. You could have written me at any time and I (might have depending on what kind of day I was having and the nature of your letter ;) answered -- you can still write me now ;) But the point of all this griping is -- I had to cut corners somewhere :)

Agraynel has pretty much said everything I would have liked to say on the matter. Also, I did make an error -- it's the Balm and the Rage that have been changed to combat-only, not the Balm and the Pride.

As for the spellsong suddenly becoming "useless" -- funny, I don't remember taking the calming effects out when I altered the exp.

And now that we have the new machine in, I can start entertaining implementing the Wanderlust stuff. Which reminds me....

Changes coming up:

The changes to bard skills will be coming up very soon. The way it will work is that if you are a bard without the second weapons requirement, you have a choice. You can choose to either raise them yourself, OR, at a cost to your lore skills, have one weapon skill boosted to the ranks necessary for your level. Survival skill will be boosted without any subtraction from your lores.

Okay, here's a thought. How about I put something in so that you can choose whether or not to calm players (past a certain level of experience ;). I figure, you're the bards, it's your song, you know how to control it. ;)

If that would help turn the Balm into a "more useful song" then I'm all for it.

Nice to see you over here, btw, Dream.

<peers at Gabriel>

Are you into my sugar stash again? ;)

The forthcoming skill changes will work like this (assuming Zoha approves 'em -- I haven't gotten that part done yet ;).

First off, survival skills, if they're lacking, will be adjusted automagically. No cost to anything. Then you get checked over to see if you have the necessary ranks for a second weapon skill. If you do, then you get marked as such and you don't lose anything because you don't have anything to adjust.

If, however, you're lacking, you're given the option. If you have a skills within 2-3 ranks of the req, you have to choose one of those. If not, then if you have any that are 1/2 of the way to the rank then you gotta choose one of those. Otherwise, if you don't have >any< of that, you simply choose anything. Note that if you are less than level 2, you get to choose anything anyway with no lore deduction. If you're more than that, however, and you choose the weapon boost, then you get ranks shaved off scholarship, mech lore, and teaching according to how many ranks of each of those skills were previously required....

Confused yet? :) I'm bad at explaining this.

Bard changes are in! You all should be notified on login of this fact, check out news 5 for more info.

There is a small survival skill req for level > 10 bards...I shaved off too much lore and had to compensate. I apologize, but I can't compensate for this requirement, however, I think it's going to be small enough that you won't notice. It should be something you earn naturally in the course of hunting. I would make the compensation for this automatic, but the time and effort it would take IMO is not worth it. Not to mention that I think you'd all would rather see me do more creative things with the profession.

I hope you all enjoy the changes.

Yup Wanderlust is in.

Lore loss from a weapons boost is distributed evenly over a set of lores. Scholarship, mech lore, teaching, and underwater pillow weaving.

Please in the future reserve this topic for posts only by the guild gurus. All questions and comments should be directed to other folders.

You're bards. I'm Elanthia's librarian, and the guy who wrote 10 of its books. Let's talk. :)

Basically, I'm looking for books from you literate drink-swilling types who snap out a sonnet, laugh out a lyric and create couplets as easy as barbarians walk and chew gum. Easier.

What sort of books, I hear you ask. Well, we are looking for IC stuff: good, lengthy poetry, short stories about Elanthia's people and its past, how-to's, etc. (Not biographies, and not major histories-- we don't use the former, and the latter are written by staff.) All books accepted for publication in Elanthia will net their writers roleplaying awards.

Submissions should follow these guidelines: set your left margin to flush left, and your right margin to 64. Use an ASCII-based text editor, and avoid using any characters like umlauts, tildes, or other, similar accents which will make our system roll over and die. Send the results to me, DR-CZARRA@AOL.COM. I will then get in touch with you.

Minor change to Playact:

Due to the number of concerts and singoffs going on and a few complaints about the restrictions to how many rounds of Playact you can perform, I've lifted all preset limits on it. The only thing that will limit the number of Playacts you may do are your natural abilities and stats. (And to forestall the obvious questions, yes, charisma is the prime one.)

Hope this helps in your performances.

Oddly enough, the supposedly most literate guild in Elanthia is the only one that hasn't yet furnished our libraries with books. Even the barbarians have sent in one. I've gotten 5 in the last 2 months from paladins, and 3 from the moonmages. Traders have stopped sweeping in those coins to write 2. But bards...? Nada.

I can use your stories, your poems, your guild guides, your notes about travels across the lands. Check for formatting requirements under General Discussions/Publishing Your Book in DragonRealms, bards, and let's do away with this stain on your escucheon which can't be dry-cleaned.

After a few hours of squinting and the selfless sacrifice of a few dozen granite gargoyle lives, the annoying bug with DRAW and enchantes is now fixed. Draw should now work properly in combat regardless of the enchante you are using.

Also, the great and powerful Ezruh should now answer to his earned title of "Leader" if you want to ask him about something.

And, though you've probably already noticed, the SPELL verb has been fixed so that it works properly with bards by our friends in the WM guild.

Be well! Lasca

This is old news to those of you who were at the meeting tonight and new news to those who are not:

I'm pleased, tickled, proud, happy, <insert adjective of choice>, to announce the addition of GM Melodia to the Bard family. Melodia will be the GM handling the CE side of the Bard Guild. Welcome her warmly! Melodia comes to us with fantastic ideas, two brains and a large stick.

So, I can hear you all murmering (at least I think that's murmering. Louder than most murmering I've heard. And put that pitchfork down!) "What does that mean to us?" I'm going to leave Melodia to most fully explain her job as she gains insight from her boss, Solomon, but I can tell you that my mandate and Melodia's is to work extremely closely on the Bard Guild. She'll be the face you see most often. She'll be the one that makes sure I'm on the right page in my dark little coding cave as to what the Guild needs and wants. She will be as fully informed as possible without me actually deeding half my brain to her. She will be the one going "You know what would be really, really cool?"

We'll both be posting more as we work this out and catch up with each other. I do ask that you go easy on her for a bit and let her catch her breath and gain her equilibrium.

To quote the immortal Martha Stewart, "This is a good thing!"

Best Lasca

Subject  Greetings! (123)
Greetings, Bards and Bardlings!

I will be posting on various subjects over the next few days, as I rush to catch everyone up on all that's going on.

But first let me say that I'm happy and excited to be here! I'm looking forward to working with each and every one of you to make our guild the best it can be. This will take time, yes, but it is my (and Lasca's too!) ultimate goal.

This post is dedicated to the subject of THE BOARDS. I will be reading the BARD boards diligently. I have been reading them for quite a while, but have been unable to post until now. I want to share with you what I'll be looking for, and what I will be responding to in this forum.

What I'll be looking for:

Clear, concise posts with Bardic problems, suggestions, concerns, etc. If it pertains to being a Bard in Elanthia, I want to hear about it!

What I'll be posting:

Just about anything I can, within the limits imposed upon me by our policy. I doubt I can give you all the information you want, but I will give you as much as I can. Things will be a bit slow at first (no, don't expect a 20-page dissertation about the state of the Bard's guild right now <g>) but as I settle in a bit more, and find out what interests you, this will become a good place to find current information.

What I won't respond to:

Rants, raves and just plain ol' complaining. Does this mean you shouldn't post those things? Absolutely not! You are free to post those (in the appropriate folders), as long as you stay within the message board guidelines. It just means that if you have a wonderful suggestion in the middle of a rant, more than likely, I won't see it.

How often I'll post:

NOT every day. <g> Well, you want things done, don't you? I will try to post on a weekly basis, even if it's only to say, "Yes, I'm still here, I'm still listening." There will be times I'll be able to post a lot. Other times will be just a line or two. I will not necessarily respond to each and every one of you. But you can be sure that the main issues of the guild will be dealt with.

Now that we have HTML message boards, everyone should be able to read them without the technical problems of the old formats. For those Bards that don't read them, give them a nudge in this direction. I think they'll be pleasantly surprised. As I hope you will all be.

Until next time, fare thee well!

Subject  What we do... (124)
For those of you who have read NEWS 102 or made it to last Friday's State of Elanthia Meeting, you know about the changes that are going on with the staff. I know there are logs of the meeting floating around out there, so I'm relinquished from hashing through all of that here. But what does it all mean to you, as Bards?

For one, you found out about me. I've been lurking about in the background with Lasca, waiting for the moment when I can come out and meet all of you. We didn't know I would be introduced at the meeting, until it happened. Before that, we had to work out who was going to do what - i.e., which side would I work on, Customer Service or Production/Development? It was a difficult decision for Lasca and I, as these changes are new to all of us, and we wanted what was best for the Bard guild, and the people in it.

As you now know, we chose the Customer Service side for myself. Lasca will work on the Production side of things. I think this best fits what is needed and what we both want to do, and will accomplish two things for the guild: 1) give Lasca the time she needs to delve into all those mechanics which sorely need work, and 2) provide that crucial link between you, the players, and us, the GM's (or whatever we'll end up being called <g>). But don't start calling me the 'missing link' or I'm going to have to borrow Lasca's gerbil launcher! <glances about, trying to look stern>

Lasca and I will continue to work together as a TEAM on the guild. There are a lot of things out there that need fixed; there are a lot of things that need to be done; there are just a lot of things, period. It will take time. <winces at all the groans> But you will see things start to happen very shortly. It may not be everything you want, and we realize that, but know that we're trying.

Something else I want to reiterate: While both Lasca and I will be working hard to get things done for you, we both have full time jobs besides what we do here in DR. And, for some odd reason, our respective bosses expect us to show up for those jobs and do that work for which they are paying us. That is true of most of the GM's that are here. What we do, we do because we love the game, and the guild. I know this has been explained before, but I wanted to be sure it was said again.

But wait a minute, you say. Great, we've got a Customer Service person now, you say, but where's Lasca's assistant??

<Melodia grins slyly and raises her hand.> Here I am! I do other things besides make sure you guys get paid attention to. Fairly soon, you'll see the results of that. There are several things I'm working on that I think you'll like. While I won't spend all my time developing, like Lasca will now be doing, I will have time to work on things for you . . . . that is, if you let me. <winks>

And you haven't lost contact with Lasca. What I know, Lasca knows. What Lasca knows...well, I'm working on that! <g> That's part of my job now, to make sure she's well informed about the happenings and such with the guild. So we can make a better guild for you, and you'll be proud to say, "Why, YES! I AM a Bard!!"

Until next time, fare thee well!

This is the post that most of you have been waiting for. Part of it, anyway.

That said, let's get down to business! Some of the things that I'll be mentioning you may already know. But it never hurts to be reminded of what you've gotten, or will get.

What has been done fairly recently:

**A fix went in that corrected the SLICE when you typed DRAW in combat. This actually was not an enchante bug. Most of you use the Rage of the Clans when hunting - so it was a logical step to assume that it was the enchante that was the issue. It was definitely a Bard issue, though - and would occur if you were doing anything Bardly while trying to slice at a critter. You shouldn't see this anymore; you should SLICE when you type SLICE and DRAW when you type DRAW.

**Someone kindly pointed out that for some strange reason, one could use the SONG verb while you were dead. See? I told you I was reading! This was fixed. You should no longer be able to do this while you are not of the living. Thank you!

**Lasca nagged the person in charge of the SPELL verb to get that fixed after, as many of you pointed out, the last fix didn't fix it. We have received word that this has been corrected for sure now. Let me know if you have any more problems with it.

**For a while, Ezruh seemed to have lost his standing as the LEADER of the Haven Guild. He has found it again (Simon probably hid it from him), and will respond to you now if you choose to call him by that name. Another issue from the boards - thanks!

TO BE CONTINUED . . . .

Until next time,

Melodia

>Ratha's Guild Leader, name slips me right now, also has that problem.

I have given Yaziyi a stern talking-to, and he will now answer to his rightful title of LEADER. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

What is being worked on for release as soon as we can get it out there:

*A BRAND new ENCHANTE! Yeah! Particulars are still being worked out, but it's in testing. This is the first project that Lasca and I worked on together, and we're looking forward to releasing it!

*You've heard rumors . . . that HINDSIGHT is 20/20 . . . pretty soon, you'll be able to find out for yourself exactly what this means! A unique BARD-only ability! And one that will grow as time goes by. . .

*Ever wanted to do more than WHISTLE at someone? Ever wanted to whistle happily? Sadly? Coming soon, emotes for whistling!

*After several futile attempts to negotiate with the old tenant of the RiverHaven Bard Shop, he was evicted from the premises. Ezruh discovered that he had no intention of ever opening a shop, and was using the building as his living quarters. Unfortunately, he left the place a mess, and it will have to be cleaned up before any new tenants can move in. But, take heart! Ezruh is currently in negotiations with some potential shopkeepers, and the situation looks very promising!

*A nifty new system, one that will facilitate role-playing and performing! (Sorry, that's the only hint I'm giving on this one!)

As we get closer to releasing these things, you'll be hearing more about them. So stay tuned!

TO BE CONTINUED . . . .

Until next time,

Melodia

NOTE: For those of you who are posting about priorities or lack thereof, let me just make this comment. So far, **I have not listed any priorities**. Nor will I. And there's a very good reason for that. Lasca and I have one priority, and one priority only: to make this guild the best it can be. Period. Many, many things are involved with doing that. Too many to ever list here, or anywhere else. I will tell you what we've done, what we're working on, the progress (or lack of progress) we're making, what we're trying to do, what we have planned. I will take your feedback, ideas and suggestions and run back to Lasca in her cave and see what we can do. Some of it, we'll be able to do. Some of it, we may not. Some of what you've already suggested we'd LOVE to do, but cannot, for reasons that I will not post here. ALL of this is a priority to us. Not everyone will agree with everything that's done or not done. And that's ok. Regardless, we will continue to try to do everything we can to work for our #1 priority - the Bard Guild.

 Now . . . on to Part 3.

--Some-- of the items that are on THE LIST (yes, we have one . . . and it's LONG):

 * Complete and total rewrite of the instrument system. This is huge. We're scoping it out now, making sure that when it's done, it'll allow us to put in all the neat things we want to put in now, but can't. So what does this mean? Well, the instrument system effects several things:

**One of the main reasons you haven't seen "new" instruments (i.e., bagpipes, harps, fangledoodles, etc.) is because in the current system there is no room for it. The rewrite would allow us to expand our horizons a bit in this area.

**Tired of the same old PLAY messages that don't seem to get any better as you do? So are we! This is another component of the instrument system that we hope to greatly improve upon, and that cannot be done until the rewrite.

**Instrument making - a system that cannot be done with the current instrument system.

**Sentience - <glances at Lasca> I can't say anything further on this one. Lasca threatened to hide my chocolate if I did.

**Instrument damage, repair, etc. - all to be improved and expanded upon with the new system.

 * Complete and total rewrite of the enchante system. This is also huge. And necessary, in order to make them better, enable them to change <hums> and layer with other enchantes for new effects. Again, unable to do any of that with the current system. Also, down the road a bit, Bard's might rediscover an ancient magic that they used to practice, long, long ago. You just never know about those things.

 * Development and building of the Aesry Surlaenis'a Bard Tower. Another big one! I literally stole this out of Lasca's grasp the moment I started working with the Guild. <winks> The Tower will be more than a guild - <glances about nervously> But I'd better not say too much about it yet. There are some that wish to never see it open again . . . .

So . . . is that all there is on THE LIST? No! Our list will grow and change as Bards grow and change. These last three are the BIG ones, though - big in development, big in coding, big in the time it takes to accomplish them. Periodically I will go through THE LIST with all of you here on the boards - rearranging it, adding new things, reminding you of the things we have done.

Until next time, fare thee well!

This has now been fixed.

Enjoy!

Subject  Enchante Fixes (132)
Some fixes have gone in to the following enchantes, as of this afternoon:

Albreda's Balm -

Reduced the amount of time that it takes for the Balm to start effecting those around you, once you start chanting it. However, in order for this to work, there are some costs involved. You may find that you cannot sing it as long as you used to, as it takes a bit more of your power to make it cycle quicker at the start.

Nexus -

There has been a post or two about possible problems with this enchante. After extensive testing and staring at the code, we found that it is extremely unlikely that power could ever be reduced, but did discover one or two specific places in the game where it might happen. This will no longer occur. Also, I did some groveling before Faenella, and convinced her to allow bards to be of more use to those users of Holy and Life magics, through the Nexus enchante. I think you will see a definite difference here.

As always, let me know if you see any problems.

Demrris' Resolve is a welcome addition or our repertoire of enchantes. It has been released for Premium review (one week).

Contrary to what I've heard spoken of it so far, it is indeed a powerful enchante. However, its power depends on its wielder. Do not assume that because you cannot win the _battle of wills_ over a particular creature, that another bard cannot as well. Not everyone trains the same way, and some bards will be more successful with this enchante than others.

Also, please head Silvyrfrost's warnings, and use wisdom in chanting Demrris' Resolve. It can be used offensively as well as defensively, and the Town Leaders have told us that they are pondering adding the enchante to their list of offenses, but are waiting for reports of abuse. We hope that you will use it with restraint and common sense.

Please let me know if you see any issues, and enjoy!

Until next time, fare thee well!

I don't tell Melodia this enough when we're working so I'm telling you all.

Great kudos to Melodia for the absolutely fantastic job she has done thus far. It has been her big stick and her even better sense of humor speaking in your voice that was the real force behind the new enchante. She wrote the messaging (I don't think you've seen it all yet) and her absolutely tireless testing over more hours than I can count was the reason that the enchante is balanced and fun...And the Balm works faster...And Nexus is more powerful.

Please take the time to applaud her. She's the best.

Subject  Proposal - Guild Rules (137)
Ever wanted a way to tell visitors in the guild what the house 'rules' are? Ever wonder what they are yourself, or why it's a rule? Ever wanted an easier way to teach new Bards the 'rules' of the guildhall and knowing you probably forgot a few yourself? Now here's your chance.

You have a way to remove unwanted guests from the guildhall. But if they don't know the rules, how can they abide by them? I'm proposing to give you a way to point to a plaque and say, "Here are our rules. Please respect them." These rules will apply to the Bard-only areas of each guildhall.

What, you think _I'm_ going to come up with the rules? Nope, sorry. It's your guild, your rules. So here's what I want you to do. I'm going to create a folder for Guild Rules, where this can be discussed, proposed, argued, etc. This is where you need to submit your rules for guild approval. This process will take a while, because I want as many Bards as possible to have the opportunity to have their say.

Here are the rules for making the rules:

1) Keep the flames away, please. Everyone has a right to his or her opinion, so let's keep it civil.

2) You need to sign your character's name to your suggestions. That's my rule. Hee!

3) You will be allowed up to TEN rules. These ten rules will apply to each guildhall, regardless of location.

4) You have only TEN rules, so make them good, and make them ones you can live with for a long, long time.

5) Lasca and I will have final say in what the rules will be, to make sure they are in line with policy, and don't exceed what you, as players, can do. We may have to change a thing here or there, but we will try to stay in the spirit of the suggested idea, if appropriate.

I'm looking forward to hearing some good suggestions from you all!

I received a note from Teshi, proprietress of the Aesry Bard Shop. Seems with the kids running amuck, and all the customers she's had lately, she made a small error with the castanets that she sells. She wanted me to let you know that this problem is now fixed (and oh, she's embarrassed that it ever happened!). If you currently own castanets, the problem of not being able to play an enchante on them will go away next time you 'awaken'. Teshi apologies to everyone for this inconvenience.

So, log out and log back in, that should fix your castanets. If it doesn't, please assist and we'll set them right for you. Thank you to everyone who BUGged this problem!!

We've made some changes to the Resolve this afternoon.

First, we fixed some things that should not have been happening. If you start to chant it, and you die, get stunned, etc., your chant will now stop. Also, you will not be able to start another enchante in the middle of the Resolve. Thanks to the Bard to sent me that mail with the specifics of this problem!

Secondly... you now have the ability to STOP chanting the Resolve -- IF you're fast enough. This should help in some situations.

As always, let me know of any problems you see!

Greetings! I realized this morning that I have not posted in a while. I read these boards daily, but don't always have the opportunity (read: time) to post responses. I didn't want you to think I had disappeared. Actually, I've been around more than you think, just in guises other than myself. <cough>

And, I'm afraid I went to visit Lasca in her cave, and I got lost. It's a maze in there! Took me a while to find my way out. I'll try not to do that again without a map.

There are some things that will be happening for you soon (read: as soon as we can get them done) that I think you'll all like. Some of those things I've already told you about, and there's an extra-special surprise in store for you too. No, I'm not going to elaborate, you'll just have to wait and see.

We've started working on some of those re-writes that I posted about earlier. I'm afraid that these are pretty major, and requires a LOT of work from both Lasca and I. I tried to explain all of this in my previous posts on the subject. Some may get the perception that we're ignoring you guys. Trust me, we're not. We're doing our best to make things even better for you. And, we're doing it as quickly as we can.

I'm still collecting the ideas and suggestions I see here on the boards, so keep posting them. Although you can't see it yet, they go a long way towards what you'll see in the future. I must say, it has been a joy and a pleasure to read the Bard boards in the last few months. So many good ideas, and real discussion! It does this Bardic soul good to be able to read such.

Until next time, fare thee well!

<She blinks. Once, twice -- until she notices you staring at her. Grinning sheepishly, she blushes, then digs underneath the pillows for a moment.>

<With a loud "Aha!!" Melodia pulls out a blue-colored sign, and holds it up.>

Looking at it, you read the words. . . .

"Soon. Very soon, my friends, you will see the results of my ordeal in the cave. It is for you, my fellow Bards, that I toiled for so hard and for so long. May you find joy in the result, and the knowledge that it is only the beginning of what is yet to come."

<Smiling, with smoke still drifting off of her fingertips, Melodia gives a wave and dives back underneath the pillows. The huge pile shudders for a brief moment, then goes still, almost as if no one was ever there.>

I am pleased to announce the promotion of GM Melodia to the Development team for Bards. Melodia has amazed us all with her quick grasp of systems and ability to wield a large stick. She'll now be devoted full time to creating new bardic things, systems and abilities. Actually, she has already done some of that and, I have to tell you, she has an evil mind and a terrific sense of what's really fun! I'd tell you more but she wouldn't allow me out of my cave for a month. This is the best thing to happen to bards since someone put pockets on a shirt.

What is that young bard yelling in the back? You still want a liaison too? Sheesh! Pushy, pushy. Fortunately, I am always prepared. Introducing your new Bard Liaison: GM Hoome!

Hoome comes to us with a solid bard background, a wicked sense of humor and more ideas than Carter has liver pills. Hoome will be your advocate here as well as being in charge of bard events and beating the Dev types into submission. If you have a new songscroll or nifty idea, Hoome is your man! Please extend him a warm welcome. I think you're going to be as happy with him as I am.

Best, Lasca

Greetings, one and all!

After several months of handling chores for Lasca and Melodia (Repairing pillows, mopping the cave floor, that sort of thing), Im very pleased to be able to join them as a member of the Bard team as your Liaison!

First and foremost Im here for you, to help you get your hopes and dreams about Bards communicated and compiled as clearly as I can. To do that I need your help:

   - Please continue to post your ideas! I have been reading your posts for
some time now, everything you put up here has the potential to end up in
what were working on, either in part or in full.

   - Understanding. As much as I would love to spill the beans on everything
thats either planned or in progress, I have to face TWO big sticks from
Lasca and Melodia and theyd beat me beardless. (Plus, they wont give me
a stick of my own!) I will tell you as much as Im able to, that much is
     certain.

   - Post your feedback here! From day to day, Ill be watching for your
comments and taking what you say to heart. Its our desire to make this
guild shine and your constructive thoughts are always welcome.

Im very lucky to be following in Melodias footsteps here on the boards, her steady and supportive presence is something I hope to be able to emulate. Ill be following her example and try to post at least some kind of weekly update, even if its to say that Im still here and falling down drunk. <g>

To all of you, new and old to the Bards, thank you for being a part of this guild and sharing yourself here and in the realms. I look forward to working with all of you on making this guild everything it can be, because I know we can accomplish it together.

<Hoome raises his cup in a toast to you all, and trips on a pillow.>

To the Bards!

Greetings all!

Thanks to the magic of the BBS here, I've been spending my time sifting through a few years worth of your suggestions for songs and abilities <oh, my eyes!>. You've all put up a ton of really terrific ideas here, some have helped inspire us about facets of Bards that we hadn't considered before. On the other hand, there are ideas there that (to my dismay) cannot be implemented because they are too similar to abilities that are integral to another guild. For the most part, here are some guidelines to follow:

-- Avoid things that directly duplicate the abilities of other guilds; extreme
examples would be a song that opens boxes, that brings someone back to life.

-- Imagine that you're working from a clean slate: There's no Lilt, Drums, etc.,
and you have to think up something from scratch. What would YOU want for
    songs?

-- Is it balanced? JimBard has an idea for a song that deafens and blinds people
by making their ear drums pop out and eyes explode. JimBard likes the idea
that they get no resistance to it and it uses 5 mana for a song pulse in a Hazy
mana room. Painful idea, but far to cheap to use and overpowered. Again, that
    was another extreme example.

-- Why would a Bard have the ability in the first place? Was it something taught
before the persecution of bards? During? Flavor it with what you might see
    as its history.

As you know, we're in the process of the system re-work that has been mentioned before. I'll be opening up a new folder to seek your input for some of that as well, check the opening message there for how to post. Also, the construction crew is working on my office - complete with a meeting room to give you all a chance to visit with me from time to time.

Keep the great ideas coming in everyone, even if my eyesight suffers...

-- Hoome

Greetings, fellow Bards!

I just wanted everyone to know that my time and presence will be scarce in the next few weeks, as Real Life has taken over once again. I will be moving across the country this month, and settling into a new home.

There are a few things that have been completed, and are waiting for final approval to be released. As the Bard team (along with everyone else behind the curtain) doesn't have the ability to release anything unapproved, we are not always in complete control of such releases, and must rely on others with schedules as hectic as ours.

And while I realize this is no comfort to those of you who have been waiting so patiently, I just wanted you to know that it's not been for lack of work on your GM's parts. I'll leave it to GM Hoome to post an update for you, which I know he plans to do within a week or two.

I will be popping in and out when I can, but there will be a space of time when I will be without a computer. <shudders> Please think nice chocolate thoughts for me as I travel across the country into a new life.

Until next time, fare thee well!

Subject  Status from the Cave (152)
Greetings!

My apologies for not posting lately, I'll try to catch up here with a note about 'Status' of things from the Cave. First off let me again thank all of you for the ideas and thoughts that you've posted, it truly is appreciated! Now, lets get down to what's going on...

-- After some hard work (and extra barrels of mead) it looks like my workshop is nearing completion. What that means is that I can stop sneaking in and using Lasca's garden to work in, but more importantly it means I'll have the mechanics to host meetings and even open up a list for questions in game.

-- Back in August Melodia announced a completed project of hers, which we're eagerly wanting to see out there as much as you do. There were a few bumps along the way, but we're hoping to get it through final approval ASAP. There have been some in game events leading up to this and will be more as we approach its release...

-- A project has started this month (Abandon all hope, all ye who now know they gave it to me) that I hope you all will enjoy. Watch out for 'Hoome's Hammer and Nails Tour', coming to an Elanthia near you.

-- Bard Guild Rules that you have suggested have been compiled and put into an IC context for display in the guild halls. I'll post the list in the Rules folder for you all to see before we add them to the Halls.

-- Bardic Whistling hasn't been forgotten or tossed away into a dumpster, it's still a current project and in progress.

-- Music System Rewrite - The current "big" project for now, and we're still taking your input for instrument messaging. To add a little spice to that, we're of the mind to put together a contest of some sort to add more player involvement. If we do this it will be during the month of November - there will be a notice here on the boards and as an In Game News since not everyone reads the folders here.

-- Hindsight - As many of you may or may not know, this was originally tied to wanderlust in its concept. Wanderlust was intended to inspire Bards to travel more but was scrapped because the changes to the Guild Required Skills accomplished that on its own. While we have paused in implementing Hindsight, we have not abandoned the ability. Please take your thoughts and ideas on uses for this to the Suggestions folder for discussion.

-- Enchante's - We now have a 'Coming Soon' banner up on the Web page under the Spell Lists. We're still going over what will be the Enchante list from all of the suggestions and ideas that have piled up over the years. I will post it here first when it's completed.

And there you have it! Please remember to post in the 'Responses to Guild Guru' folder if you wish to respond to this post, and not the 'Announcements' folder.

"Ale, it's not just for breakfast anymore."

Greetings!

The bug with bardic appraisal of an instrument that is shown to you has been dealt a boot to the head, leaving it more than a little addled. You may note that with some instruments that do not require a (pick / bow / drum stick), there's an added notation akin to:

The ironwood flute requires an ironwood flute to be played.

Yes, I know that seems silly to put in the appraisal, It's also not intended to show up like that and we're looking into correcting that as well.

Greetings once more!

<Hoome wrings out his moldy sock. Ewww.>

First off, for those of you who didn't get the opportunity to see Lasca and I at the Festival getting dropped in the dunk tank, you missed a ton of fun. I'll be popping in there a few more times this week when I can - and let me tell you, It'll be weeks before the cave is dry again! Lasca already thrashed me once for ruining the carpet in her room.

Let me also re-post Alnilam's notice about the version of the Ebony Lyra Viol that was sold the first day or so at the Festival. If you have one that can't be played with a Bow, but with a Pick, ASSIST and we'll get that taken care of for you. We'll also be actively correcting them for the next few days, so you might just find it suddenly is playable with a Bow. (Any new ones purchased now are correct, btw.)

And lastly, the bug regarding appraisal of an instrument that is shown to a bard is now dead and buried. Thanks once again to everyone who called attention to that!

Bug fix for 'Meraud's Blessing': A long standing bug which inhibited harness recovery to those affected by the 'Blessing' has been corrected. This bug only manifested when the Enchante was stopped while the listener was at full harness, the result leaving the listener's harness total 'stuck' slightly below maximum. Harness recovers properly from the song now.

Greetings and Happy New Year!

More than a few of you have inquired about guidelines for submitting a written work for the Guild, so I went back and dug up GM Czarra's posts on the subject. The guidlines are the same, just submit them to DR-Hoome@play.net and DR-Melodia@play.net instead.

It fills me with great pleasure to announce this bit of news:

* News Item 28 * Dateline 1/5/2000: Bard's Guild News

More Blessings for the Bards: While correcting some issues with the enchante 'Meraud's Blessing,' we also gave the whole song a facelift. The effect of the 'Blessing' now has far greater potential, and also takes into consideration several aspects of the performer to determine the strength of the enchante.

Have at it and enjoy!

Tankards purchased from The House of Bardic Blues (Riverhaven Bard Shop) now have a new purpose in life.... There will be kegs popping up around Elanthia, in known Bardic 'hangouts', where you will be able to partake of the beverages inside. For a small cost, of course.

There is one keg out there now (I'd check the shop, you never know) and soon there will be more. This has signicantly changed the way these tankards work. I hope to eventually have enough kegs in enough areas so that you'll never have to go thirsty again.

Enjoy! Melodia

Greetings. Although I never thought this day will come, here it is. Just a short note to let everyone know that I will no longer be reading these message boards on a daily basis. I'm taking a break, and I'm not sure I'll return to reading them again.

Since it will be obvious to most of you why I've made this decision, I'll refrain from posting that here. For those of you who have made thoughtful, insightful and positive posts, thank you! It has been a joy reading them and the ideas they have inspired. As for keeping up with all of you, GM Hoome will continue to keep me informed on all the happenings here, a job he already does excellently. And, I will continue to read the reports that I receive from the board monitor, Felshi. She does a great job of getting all of your information into a concise document on a regular basis.

I will also be removing myself from the OneList Bard List. It is not very constructive for me to hear how much we don't care and don't listen to the Bards. :( As always, I am reachable via e-mail (DR-Melodia@play.net).

I am not going anywhere, I will still be working away in my cave on all things bardly.

Until next time, fare thee well!

Assistant Game Designer Positions Open: Product Development Team

Can you build a fantasy world with words? Do you love to write?

The DragonRealms Product Development Team has several Area Design positions available.

These AGDs (Assistant Game Designers - the Product Development equivalent of AGMs) will work as part of the World Building and Area Design group. They may create everything from quest areas to hunting areas; they may work on future provinces, or on additions to current provinces and guilds. Creativity, the ability to function as part of a team, strong descriptive writing skills and accurate spelling and grammar are required. Knowledge of and interest in Elanthian history is helpful.

If this interests you, please fill out the GM application that you can find on the Simutronics website (from the main page, go to "Files", then "DragonRealms File Libraries", then "Simutronics Official Files" for the GM Application form).

**In addition to the application itself, please submit the following writing sample**

Choose TWO of the following categories. For each of your two choices, design areas consisting of a minimum of five rooms. Include descriptions of all furnishings, objects and items of interest in each room, and format your sample as though you were seeing it in the game.

Categories:
- a five-room home for your main character, using the remaining five rooms to describe some of the surrounding area, or
- a portion of a new hunting area, or
- an expansion of an existing Guildhall, or
- a portion of a new festival fairground, or
- a Player Homes neighborhood

Submit your completed application and writing sample to
DRAPPS@simutronics.com. In the Subject Heading, please include the word "Design".

Thank you to any of you who are interested in joining the DragonRealms World Building team! We look forward to hearing from you!

After having requests to open another troupe topic, Hoome and I looked over the situation and felt the best course of action would be to open one general folder for all troupes and performers to offer their services and for others to seek out a troupe or performer for their own engagements. This is to keep down on the amount of folders we have in here. The new topic is The Open Stage and is now available to be posted in.

I will be moving the last few messages from the Troupe of the Four Winds folders over to this topic in the next few days. Do not post in the Troupe of the Four Winds topic from now on. Any messages posted in the Troupe of the Four Winds will be removed.

As most of you are aware, the Bard Guild has suffered from a series of promotions that seem to keep stealing GMs from you. Its not fair! Not too long ago you once again lost your Guild GM as she was promoted to SGM, and the demands on her in that position made working with the Guild almost impossible...but she stuck with it until she could get Melodia trained.

Melodia is a great GM. She came to us, wanting to work with the Bard's Guild, and she has some tremendous ideas for the Guild. It's time to turn her lose and let her step up to the bar and show us all what she can do.

Consequently, I would like you all to join me in celebrating Melodia's promotion from assistant Game Designer, to Game Designer (for you old timers like me, that's AGM to FGM), and her appointment as Guild GM to the Bard's Guild.

I look forward to some great things from Melodia, and I believe she is the one that can kickstart this guild and get it running again. Be patient with her, be kind, but demand the world and maybe you'll get a state or country. :)

Congrats Melodia!

Subject  Adieu and Congratulations (166)
It's taken me many minutes to compose this because it's one of the most difficult posts I've ever had to write. This occasion is tinged with great pride and happiness as well as great sadness and excitement.

I'll start with the terrific news: I'm extremely pleased and proud to announce Melodia's promotion to Bard Guild Guru. Some of you may have already read this in another place on the boards. I apologize that you heard it elsewhere first. Treveri and I got our wires crossed a bit on who would make this announcement. Entirely my fault.

Why is this terrific news? Because Melodia has been working her lute off learning the bard systems (no easy task!!). You've already seen the changes and tweaks and new things that Melodia has built in her learning period. I've had the advantage of seeing some of the plans and proposals being floated and I'm constantly amazed at her imagination and genuine deep love of bards and all things bardic. You can't ask for a better Guru or advocate.

And then there's Hoome. You all already know Hoome and his passion for bards and the players behind the bards. He brings some of the best ideas I've ever heard to the table as well as an enthusiasm that's unstoppable. Not to mention his ability to make anyone listening to his jokes spit milk out of their nose.

That leads me to the sadness--I'm stepping away from bards to work on building areas like Province 5. This is not a bad thing for anyone. The hands I'm leaving your guild in are so much more skilled and capable than mine and can offer you so much more than I ever did, this is the best thing that ever happened to this guild.

I can't tell you all how much I've enjoyed watching you all...listening to all the rehearsals you've held...knowing that the bard guild is the guild that takes care of each other more than any other. You're going to have a fantastic future, a great ride and something to be proud of.

I'll still be about here and there....building a new province and, since my heart will always be with the best group of guild folks out there, putting a few surprises in there just for you all. My email is always open as well. :)

Be well, be good to each other and enjoy your Guru and team. They're going to take good care of you.

My Deepest and Fondest regards, Lasca

First, I'd like to give my whole-hearted thanks, gratitude and appreciation to Lasca. We've been working closely together for over a year now, and I've learned so much about being a GM from her - all things Bardic and otherwise. I consider myself quite fortunate to have her as a teacher, and more important than any of that, as a personal friend. So while she has moved on (to an extremely well deserved promotion!) she has not left. She is still there for me to nag- er, pose questions to and such, and although the Bard guild is no longer her responsibility, she will *always* be welcome in its folds. Please join me in congratulating her, and wishing her well in her new endeavors.

Second, I'd like to respond to some of the musings I've seen here on the Bard boards:

>>No offense Melodia, but you are still new and young as a GM. It's not like having Rowan or even Lasca up there.

<chuckles> I guess not. But I'm not as 'young' as you might think. I was raised up in the Bard guild, and then had Lasca as my mentor, so I've had some good learnin. <g> Of course, I suppose I could abdicate the guild to another, older GM . . . and if they don't know the Bardic systems, and don't know what magic means to a bard, or performing, or instruments, or . . . well, that won't matter much, because they won't be a 'new' GM. <hums>

>>The reason I have my doubts is because I have to ask, how far back are we delayed, again? Are Lasca's projects going to be continued? or scrapped? Do you know exactly what she was doing and are able to continue?

Delayed? We're not delayed at all. If you've read the posts in the last year or so, you'll have seen that Lasca and I worked quite closely together. Nothing happened in this guild without both of us knowing about it. That includes the entire project planning, as well. When Hoome came on board with us, he was quickly included in all of this knowledge (much to his overwhelming bewilderment at the time - he's since recovered and throws more projects at me than I can shake my big stick at). The Bard team is just that - a TEAM.

>>I noticed, when going through the other folders lately, that the barbs have four -- count em FOUR -- Gms. We have two most excellent ones, but we could use more.

This is a bit misleading. They don't really have four GM's assigned to them. They have their Guru, the Assistant Guru and the Liaison. The fourth GM has other responsibilities, but keeps his hands in the Barbarians pot, so to speak. You actually have more GM's than just your Bard Team that does things for you, but those persons do not post, which is their choice. And no, I won't name them, for I respect their privacy and wishes.

So now we're back to two GM's on the Bard Team. Believe me when I say that my nagging began as soon as my promotion took place. Actually, it began before that. <g> I can only say that, as you may know from past experience, these things take a little time, just like any other work place.

>>I want that kind of affection and interaction from my gms, too, and i know the bards deserve it

Yes, the Bards do deserve it. And they have gotten a lot of attention. From me, from Hoome, and from others who shall remain nameless. However, when things have happened, rarely did I see BBS posts about it, or even gweth messages ingame. Just because the players aren't telling everyone about it, doesn't mean its not happening. <borrows one of Brandewynne's wry smiles> Oh, and that doesn't count the times when those happenings have been ignored . . . have I mentioned how much it pains me to give Bards warnings for violating our policy on learning experience, etc. while not paying attention to the game? <coughs>

Third, Hoome and I are working on an update for you. I know it's been a while, and I apologize for that. We hope to have that out for you before next week. And yes, there will be a meeting. Hoome will also be posting more about that as we go along. In the meantime, you'll find me in my cave, hard at work for you. As always, I can be reached via email.

Regards,
 Melodia

Subject  Blizzard (168)
When the Events team created the blizzard, they had absolutely no intention of 'persecuting' anyone, let alone the Bard guild, as has been suggested by some. It is an ingame event, and the reason for the blizzard may be revealed at a later date. To be honest, it just hadn't occurred to them that anyone would be directly affected -- it was considered an RP event, and it was assumed that people would react in an RP'ing manner.

The Bard team, for their part, had no idea the blizzard would last as long as it has. For a short-term event, it's fine. But as I'm sure you will agree, it's gone a bit longer than necessary. <coughs> So we made some arrangements with the events team to come up with a compromise. As soon as the events team leader returns, we will see about coming up with a longer-term arrangement, until the blizzard finally ends.

So, as of last night, you should be seeing breaks in the blizzard. You must still be careful with your instruments, as the thick clouds can spout snow at any time. But hopefully these breaks in the snow will ease things just a bit. I'll be keeping an eye on the weather, so if things get to be a bit much again, I can take immediate recourse.

Regards,
 Melodia

Just a clarification of using MEETING:

<#> <question> - Submits a question to the specified meeting
EX: meeting 1 Why is the sky blue?

There's been a few entries that are incomplete, please make sure your question is entered all in one line as shown in the example above or it'll get lost.

To give you an idea...

meeting 2 So, can we bring soda and popcorn to the meeting? And do we gotta share?

Greetings!

It is my pleasure to introduce to you the newest member of the Bard Team -- your new Bard Liaison, GM Deryka. She comes to us from some great Bardic stock, and will fit right in here.

Don't despair, GM Hoome isn't going anywhere! He is still part of the team, and no doubt you'll continue to see his presence on the boards and in-game. But with Deryka as your new liaison, he'll now have a little more time to work on all things Bardic.

Please give a warm Bardic welcome to Deryka -- we're extremely proud to have her as the Bard liaison!

I've corrected Demrris' Resolve so that now, if the critter is able to be brought down by the enchante (and you are able to bring him/her down), they will no longer stay hidden.

In the save vein, if the critter resists, and is hiding from you, you will no longer see that they are resisting.

Please let me know if you see any problems.

<tacks up this notice on the board>

The guildleaders, having heard that some people were using their instruments as weapons, became outraged and immediately took steps to prevent this. In the near future no instrument, whether it is wielded by a Bard or not, should be able to be thrown or used as a weapon against a foe. If anyone finds a Bard using an instrument in this manner, they are encouraged to let the proper authorities know.

<OOC Translation: This is your warning that sometime in the next couple days, instruments won't be able to be used with brawling anymore! As always, if you find any bugs with this, just let us know. :)>

Subject  Getting my pace back... (191)
Please forgive this as being a bit late. I've run into some problems in the land of Mundania and am just catching up with you folks again. :)

Regarding System Rewrites:

To answer the curiosity of some, these systems are indeed in the process of being rewritten, not merely being planned. Beyond mentioning the fact that it is a long and involved process, dependent upon systems other than ours as well, there isn't much I can say. The re-releasing of certain songs and bug fixes is a good example of the recoding that is becoming a constant project with us. These rewrites are one of the chief reasons that folders such as 'Instrument Messaging' were created -- to give any and all people willing to post a hand in the creation of the new system, and a greater chance to see the things that _they_ want to see. Looking at the posts that have been there, they contain an amount that is only a fraction of what we need.

To reiterate, as always, I cannot promise that all messaging put in that folder will make it to the hands, picks, or drumsticks of future bards ... but by posting there one has a damn good chance of it.

Regarding Enchantes:

For knowledge of future enchantes that we are planning (and/or working on) I urge you to keep an eye on Hoome's web page. Enchantes are a subject that is tricky to comment on with the limitations we have, and always an ongoing subject with us. What we can tell you regarding our plans in the way of a list for the future, we will post there. That is not *our* whole list. That is just the list that we can publicly post for you, and most likely the ones that are closest to completion.

Regarding Bards and Magic:

Bardic Magic systems, be it enchantes, devices, or something else entirely <muhahaha> is something we are handling. The Bard Team, not the General Magic Gurus. This is not to say that the two systems will never mesh -- we are constantly keeping an eye on how things with general magic change to make sure that nothing will arise to prevent all future opportunities for Bards there.

General comments on Bardic magic: The IC place of a Bard and how she/he works with magic would be awesome to hear from you folks about. It will help us to look at them, our own definitions, and the trends of the general magic system to make something that keeps symmetry with all three. True Bardic _Magic_. I've loved the posts you have made so far on this subject and made doubly sure that both Hoome and Melodia saw them too.

It is your thoughts and ideas that you (meaning all Bards) post that help you most. I cannot stress that enough. Each of us on the Bard team have our own thoughts and visions of how we want to steer Bards as a Guild, as well as our own meshed decisions of where we need to go. But we also have it deeply ingrained into us to look to the Bardic population as a whole and try to encompass _their_ visions as well, at least in part.

We see this wide picture through the message boards and your wonderful, detailed posts. We see it through your one-liner posts that spark an additional thought or even a chuckle. We see it in the words by the quieter, reserved folks as well as those who feel free to speak out. We see it in your emails that you send with questions, books, songs, or ideas. And we see it in your speech during meetings when you tell us 'It would make my day if we had this. I imagine it to be ...'

It takes time for us to read your thoughts. To look at them from your view, our view, the view of the other guilds, the view of Bards as a whole. To even to talk to each other, saying "Cool, how would we go about doing this?" or "God I wish we could do that but we'd have to twist some arms." You've already spent that time, more time than you should have, waiting. I grant you that. I've waited too. Hopefully (and I fervently hope this) you won't have to wait much longer before you see some marked differences anymore.

And no, I will (following in my brother Bard's footsteps) never, ever tell you 'Soon' in regard to an upcoming project. All I can say is that I'm crossing my fingers and hoping as much as you are that it won't be much longer. More -- I know what is actually coming. That makes it worse.

Regards from the willow and a Bardic heart,
 Deryka

Subject  Design A Songbook Contest! (192)
Reposting from News 28 for you folks. :)

    ~Deryka~

[8/6/2000] DESIGN A SONGBOOK Contest.

1) Only the first entry submitted by each Bard will be considered for the contest. This contest is only open to Bards.

2) Entry must contain the following information in the header: Character Name, Date Submitted, and whether the Bard is in DragonRealms Prime or DragonRealms Platinum. Entries MUST be submitted by midnight September 1st, pacific time.

3) Entries should be sent to DR-MELODIA@PLAY.NET, DR-HOOME@PLAY.NET, DR-DERYKA@PLAY.NET and will only be accepted if they are enclosed in the body of the email or attached with a TXT file. All other emails will not even be read.

4) Entries should be composed of a TAP description, and no more than eight VERBS that can be used with it. For Example:

  TAP: a worn leather songbook

Verbs:
SHAKE: You shake your leather songbook, watching stale tart crumbs fall out onto the ground.
THUMP: You drum your fingers on the cover of your leather songbook.

These are obviously very simple examples. TAP descriptions should not be longer than 80 characters (including spaces). Verbs should be clearly labeled and their text should not exceed 250 characters. Entries will not be considered if they fall beyond these guidelines.

5) There will be five winners selected in DragonRealms Prime and one winner in DragonRealms Platinum, within two months after the final date for submitting entries has passed. Each winner will win a copy of their finished songbook and one free alteration of that songbook. Alterations are available on descriptions only.

6) Disclaimer: (you knew there would be one) Winning songbooks may need to be changed slightly, for editing purposes, when it comes to actually making them. All submitted entries become the intellectual property of Simutronics Corp.

7) Any questions should be sent to DR-DERYKA@PLAY.NET.

Subject  Design a tapestry contest! (193)
***** FOR BARDS ONLY *****

Are you familiar with the history of Elanthia? More specifically, the historical events that Bards were a part of before the guild halls opened up again? Then this contest is for you!

Design a tapestry that will be displayed in a room in one of the Bard guild halls. (No, we can't tell you which room, yet!) The tapestry should depict an Elanthian historical occasion that involved at least one bard, in the times before the guild halls opened again. Describe the event (what the tapestry LOOKs like) in 450 characters or less (including spaces).

We'll be judging on historical accuracy, flow of words and the description of the tapestry. There will be five winning entries chosen between both Platinum and Prime. Winners will get their tapestry in one of the Bard guild halls, and a special prize (to be announced later). Sorry, but due to the nature of the room these tapestries will exist in, they cannot be publicly accredited ingame to the designer (meaning, we can't put your name on the tapestry itself). However, we will make sure the winners are announced on the boards and in NEWS ingame.

Contest begins immediately; see rules below!

1) Only the first entry submited by each Bard will be considered for the contest. This contest is only open to Bards.

2) Entry must contain the following information in the subject line and top of email:
Character Name, Dated submitted, and whether the Bard is in DragonRealms Prime or DragonRealms Platinum.

Entries MUST be submitted by midnight August 31st Pacific time.

3) Entries should be sent to DR-MELODIA@PLAY.NET and will only be accepted if they are enclosed in the body of the email or attached with a .TXT file. All other emails will not be considered.

4) Entries should be composed of a LOOK description with the above-mentioned historical theme, with no more than 450 characters (including spaces). Entries will not be considered if they fall beyond these guidelines.

5) There will be five winners selected within one month after the final date for submitting entries has passed. Each winner will have their tapestry hung in a room in one of the Bard guild halls (to be announced later), and will receive a special prize (to be announced later).

6) Standard Disclaimer:
Winning tapestries may need to be changed slightly, for editing purposes, when it comes to actually making the tapestries. All submitted entries become the intellectual property of Simutronics Corp.

7) Any questions should be sent to DR-MELODIA@PLAY.NET.

Subject  Re: Design a tapestry contest! (194)
I received a question that made me realize that perhaps I didn't explain myself as well as I had thought in my previous post. <chuckles>

When I say history, I mean the history that can be found in books, and ingame, etc. Or, in a more OOC explanation, BEFORE players came into the game. So one might do a tapestry on Aurilae Cui'Gweld, who sang to the trolls.

However, the occasion described in the tapestry doesn't have to be a 'big' thing... for instance, perhaps you might want the tapestry to show Aurilae arriving at Fayrin's. As long as it's historically accurate (as accurate as one can get with our histories), and involves a bard, then it's fair game.

Hope this helps!

Regards, Melodia

The pressures of life call to me, and with Hoome and Melodia's permission I'm going to be scarce for the next two weeks. Don't think that I'm not keeping an eye on both the boards and the songbook contest during that time -- I am. I'm sure that both Hoome and Melodia will be in and out a bit during this time to keep an eye on things too, like they always do. Please do not assist if you can't whistle in a bardly manner, as you just need a bit more experience to do so. If you think there's a problem, please use BUG, or post here on the message boards.

Rakash Bards will only be able to whistle while in human form; and as they have no lips, Prydaen and S'kra will not be able to invoke the Bardic whistling. Please be patient, I have something else I'm working on for you guys that you'll be able to do instead.

Enjoy!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It was extremely disheartening, to say the least, to discover that people had chosen to begin to express their unhappiness regarding recent changes by personally attacking the guild gurus. Expressing your opinion of a change in the game is always allowed, even encouraged. We like to hear your feelings regarding things as it helps us to make the game a better place for you. However, please remember when you begin to post that there are real people on the other side of those DR- names; people with feelings and people who are not permitted to defend themselves.

If, at any time, you feel that a GM is not doing their job or that they have slighted or harmed your character in any way, you may always bring this to the attention of drfeedback@play.net. If you are concerned over the actions of a Board Monitor you may also use feedback or you can email Antiquity, or myself at dr-antiquity@play.net, or dr-felshi@play.net or you can email our supervisor, Fyremelody at fyremelody@play.net.

As a reminder, flaming of anyone, even the GMs, can result in warnings and possibly removal of your message board privileges. We want these boards to be pleasant for everyone that reads them. Be constructive in your critism, not angry or hurtful.

When GM Brigdha rolled in the updated experience changes (see NEWS 11 for more information), there were a number of things that unexpectedly came to light. Without going into the gory details, the calculations of lore requirements for Bards seems to be a bit... off. <g>

No, we did NOT change any requirements. We would not do that without letting you guys know. Sheesh!

No, we did NOT know that this would happen. If we'd known, then it wouldn't have happened, because we would have already fixed it. ;}

Basically an old, OLD Bard calculation is incorrect, one that goes back a long way. That's why you're seeing such ... uh, interesting numbers.

Please bear with us as we slog through this, trying to figure out the best way to 'fix' it. While we're in there, we may just make some changes on requirements, based on the feedback all of you have given us over the past few years. Rest assured though, if we do that, we WILL tell you what they are before you get it.

Hello, all. I've recently had a wee chat with GM Valdrik (well, we chat quite a bit, but this one I'll tell you about!), and we've come to an understanding of sorts.

Those of you who have interest in things Bardic Magic and Elanthia may want to check out the "Magic - Suggestions, Discussions and Thoughts" folder under the "Abilities, Skills and Magic" category. GM Valdrik has posted the intro to what I think will be a very interesting discussion.

Please remember -- all rules of that particular folder still apply. If you want to talk about a particular enchante, the Magic Team *cannot* help you. You must post here in the Bard boards, in the enchante folder. This is the same across all guilds, not just us. And no guild vs. guild stuff, please. Besides not really applying to the situation at hand, it's not very productive.

So, join in on the discussion. The Bard Team will be there as well. Have fun!

Regards,
 Melodia

Tapestry Contest Winners Announced!

The judges have decided! It was a difficult decision to choose just five entries for the tapestry contest as all the entries were quite well done. Thanks to all who participated!

As specified in the contest rules, due to the nature of the room these tapestries will exist in, they cannot be publicly accredited *ingame* to the designer (meaning, we can't put your name on the tapestry itself). The winning tapestries may need to be changed slightly, for editing purposes. All submitted entries become the intellectual property of Simutronics Corp.

Winners will be contacted by GM Melodia so that the winner's prize may be collected. Please do NOT assist or report ingame about this -- you will be contacted, we promise!

And the winners are (in no particular order):

 Lareine Decaeli
 Cirissa Tereha
 Dreamheart Delaevan
 Aeslyba Garske
 Dewsong DeRosa

Congratulations to all!

Note from GM Melodia: My apologies for the lateness of this announcement, but my mail server has been having difficulties, and I was unable to receive all of the contest judge's decisions until recently.

Greetings!

The time has come to announce the winners of the Songbook Contest! Thanks to all of you who submitted entries, they were a true pleasure to read. And a riot in some cases. <G> The following people were ranked to have submitted the best songbooks by our panel judges:

 Kithria Dustdanser
 Pagius Burwick
 Sephirin Altruden

Winners, you will be contacted in-game about how to collect your prizes. As Melodia said for the tapestry contest, please do NOT assist or report in-game about receiving your prize, I'll make sure you're contacted _somehow_. Congratulations, folks!

As stated in the rules, all of the entries became intellectual property of Simutronics Corp. when they were submitted. The songbooks may need to be changed slightly when it comes to actually making them.

If you have any questions, please address them to the 'general discussions' boards, or plop them in my mailbox at dr-deryka@play.net.

As of two minutes ago, the first of the sleight of hand skills was released on a 1 week premium preview. This is basicly a fluffly kind of ability for now. As time goes on the ability will expand to involve other things. But for now, It's coins from behind the ear type stuff (Gotta start somewhere).

This ability alone is for both Thieves and Bard. What Bards get will vary just a tad from thieves.

There are 8 things you can do with this ability, When you get your training, you'll learn the first. The rest you have to learn on your own via testing.

Have fun... and good luck.

GM Royce

***

If a Bard has enough training, they can do this as well. As GM Royce said, it will be just a bit different. But I think you'll enjoy it.

How do you do it? Ask your friendly neighborhood thief, they might be able to give you a clue, or two....

Enjoy! Melodia

Hello all! I'm cross-posting this information about the Magic System Meeting to make sure you guys all get a look -- and many thanks to Daerlynn for piping up and asking about Bards! Keep in mind what GM Valdrik says in the second post however -- this is not a meeting to discuss the individual types of magic, Bardic or otherwise. Basically this is a meeting that deals with the Magic System as a whole, and anyone with an interest in _all_ types of magic is invited to attend.

You can check the Calender of Events for DragonRealms (should be on the BBS entry page) for the dates of the meeting.

Hey all, Lets start looking for a good date for a Magic Team / Magic User meeting.

I suspect there are a lot of folks that have something they wish to get off their chest or simply ideas that they need to voice.

I can't guarantee your going to like the answers, but I feel in the spirit of the season,(that would be election, not Christmas) your due to be at least listened too.

I was looking in the Month of December for a date, I know most folks travel on the weekend of the 21st, but truthfully thats the weekend I am looking at.

Gimme yer idears for a date around there and a time, I will try to coordinate your thoughts into a time and date that is conducive to the most.

With magical respects,

GM Dalzien

Does this include Bards as well? Will Bardic magic be discussed?>>

Bards are more than welcome to come, but y'all have to realize something....

I am not able to make any comment on Bardic Magic. I *have* been talking with Melodia about Bardic Magic, but what gets told to you, the player, is totally up to her. Now, if there's a question that has to do with how Bards interact with other magic systems, I may be able to give some answer, though it wouldn't be a total answer. I or Dalzien <nudge Dalzien, nudge nudge> will be inviting Melodia and the rest of the Bard team to attend. But then you must realize this <G>, it's a Magic meeting, not a guild meeting. So, if the Bard team does in fact come, they'll be there making sure that I don't flap my yap about Bardic stuff <grins>.

Subject  New Contest -- Name the Guildhouses! (210)
The new contest is here! This is a re-posting of what can be found in the in-game News, guys. Please post here on the message boards (well, in the Reponses to Guild Guru's folder) or email me at DR-DERYKA@PLAY.NET if you have any problems or questions.

    ~Deryka

[12/18/2000] NAME THE GUILDHOUSE CONTEST!

Yes, you heard us right, this is a contest to name the Guildhouses of the Elanthian Bards! Why, do you ask? Well, naming the different Guildhouses opens the door for post-titles among other things, so keep that in mind when submitting your entry.

RULES:

1) Only the first entry submitted by each Bard will be considered for the contest. This contest is only open to Bards of the fifth circle and above.

2) Each entry must contain the following information in the header: Character Name, Date Submitted, and whether the Bard is in DragonRealms Prime or DragonRealms Platinum. Entries MUST be submitted by midnight February 1st, pacific time.

3) Entries should be sent DR-DERYKA@PLAY.NET and will only be accepted if they are enclosed in the body of the email or attached with a TXT file. All other emails will not even be read.

4) Entries should contain the names of one or more of the following current Guildhouses:
   a. Crossing
   b. Shard
   c. RiverHaven
   d. Ratha

Up to three possible suggestions can be sent in for each Guildhouse, but all must be contained in the same entry form. Please try to make the names of each Guildhouse no longer than 40 characters, including spaces. Other entries will be considered but it would be preferred to be less than 40 characters.

5) Winners will be chosen from either DragonRealms Prime or Platinum, or any combination thereof. Three winning entries will be chosen for each Guildhall. Each winner will receive one prize from a selection of Bardic items (to be chosen from when the prize is awarded).

6) Disclaimer: (you knew there would be one) There is no guarantee that any of the winning entries will be chosen to be either names of the Guildhouses or made into post-titles. If any are, they may need to be changed slightly when it comes into implementing them in-game. All submitted entries become the intellectual property of Simutronics Corp.

7) Any questions should be sent to DR-DERYKA@PLAY.NET. (Note: No, I'm not going to tell you what the specific prizes will be.)

Greetings!

Regarding the Balm -vs- Pirates, Elpalzi, and other things that go bump in the night:

After much digging (and lots of player input) I believe we've got this bug licked. I had made a degree of assumption as to where the problem was, and once I looked at it all again with Paerr's recent post it fell into place for me.

As of tonight I put in a change so that if a critter resists (and they're not hidden, same as with PC's) you and others in the room should be properly messaged when the Balm does its thing.

Please leave a note in the Bugs folder if there's any problem with the change.

Regards,

Greetings!

Some of the mechanics in Naming of Tears were updated tonight in order to smooth out how it interacts with the game environment. You might notice little differences, but no values relating to the effectiveness of the enchante were changed.

As always, if you do happen to notice anything really odd you can either BUG what was happening or leave us a note on the boards.

----====--------====--------====--------====--------====--------====----

[3/9/2001] Guildhouse Name Contest Winners!

Congratulations to all of the contest winners! In no particular order, the finalists for winning the guildhouse and post title contest are:

Arathelle (Li Gaen Abule, Pala Blufaedoafi)
  Kortny (Siryn's Solace)
Taigue (Hall of the Broken Cutlass, Lorekeeper's Retreat)
Ruppi (House of the Broken Cutlass, Lanival's Rest)
Kithria (Siryn's Honour, Faldeshu Performers, Li Ward Aevar, Songwinds)
Espritia (Dwelling of the Faldesu Musicians)
Nystarn (The Dragon's Shadow, The Hidden Melody)
  Wyrrd (Island Conservatory)

There is no guarantee that any of these will be actually used for post titles! They do, however, greatly represent what we were looking for in them, and you all were a wonderful inspiration. Thank you, everyone who entered!

The winners are reminded that regardless of which guildhouse names they won for, each are entitled to only one of the select items when a member of the Bard Team contacts them about their prize. Again, congratulations to you alll!

----====--------====--------====--------====--------====--------====----

[3/9/2001] Survey Completed!

Thank you very much, everyone who completed the survey! The clerks are now on their way back to their respective guildhalls to tally the votes before they are submitted to the guildleaders. We were able to briefly stop one for comment, and he admitted that they would be changing the titles to different levels, so that the guildleaders could better add more to the current pool. An overwhelming majority seemed to agree that they would like this approach the most.
Rumor has it that more clerks of this nature will be found to be roaming in the future, but there are no solid facts available yet. Bards are advised to keep a watch out in case more information for the guildleaders is needed.

----====--------====--------====--------====--------====--------====----

Good journeying!

Subject  That darn 'Casting...' message. (214)
Greetings all,

The '...makes it hard to concentrate on your music...' bug is now in the 'squished' pile that inhabits my sock. Thanks for all the reports and posts, as always it makes things that much easier when we need to go bug stompin. Now, here's some details:

1) Anyone casting on/at Bards who were performing an Enchante were getting the '...makes it hard to concentrate on your music...' message/result.

-- Um, ok - what the heck was that about?

2) Casting a spell while performing an Enchante was supposed to (read: never worked right) generate that message and effect on the Bard. Something was changed recently which essentially shook that loose and was sending that to the caster and not the Bard (see #1) resulting in the bug.

-- Hrmph, figures - so what does that mean for us now?

3) Casting (Read: PREP and CAST type) a spell while playing 'non-combat classed songs (like the lilt, drums, etc that normally give a '...makes it hard to concentrate on your music...' message/result while attacking) will generate that message and resulting effect.

-- Well, why's that and is this the end of the change?

4) Good questions -- This was by far the smallest change which we chose to go with to fix the problem (and believe me, we did chew around several ideas). The code that this is a part of controls alot of what goes on with Enchantes and this (for now) was the least invasive way to adjust things. Could we see this applied to casting while playing any enchante? It's not out of the question, and wouldn't be a huge burden on the Bard while playing should that happen.

For now, I'm just glad the bugger is sqished <g>

Regards,

--Hoome

As of several moments ago, all races are now able to WHISTLE in a Bardic manner, if they have enough skill to do so.

My apologies for this taking so long -- when the special Bard whistling was released, I was trying to stay consistent with the original design of the races. As some of you pointed out, there are other areas that are not quite as consistent. <g>

With this information, I took this back to the race champion GM's requesting that I just let all Bards whistle in a Bardic manner, regardless of race. Fortunately, they agreed, and the changes are in. <cheers>

Enjoy!

---------------------------------

BARD GUILD MEETING

A full Bard Guild meeting has been planned for the evening of June 29th, at 9pm EST. Please utilize the MEETING verb to let us know your questions ahead of time, so we'll be able to give you well-informed answers instead of vague ones on-the-spot. (Keep in mind that you only get to enter one question per person!) Portals will be available from every major city and island for Bards to travel to this meeting, and going through the same portal will allow you to return to your previous location. This meeting will only be open to Bards.

Bring caffeine, this is going to be a long one. For questions about this meeting, please direct them to the DragonRealms Bulletin Boards, The Bards' Conservatory, Responses to Guild Guru Announcements.

Hello Bards!

Here is the list of approved titles for Bards up to 300th circle, based upon the results of the in-game survey, the ideas for titles that you have submitted, the potential levels Bards will someday reach, and myriad other factors. Note: These are NOT available yet. They are not coded, but Melodia had gotten the approvals and wanted you to know what was coming. It may take some time for these to be coded yet, with so many people going to Simucon. There is a *small* chance that these titles will be tweaked slightly during coding, but no problems are expected.

Pardon the formatting. You may wish to maximize your window if you're able, to better see this.

   Levels
5-9 Ballad Monger, Busker, Woodsmith, Drifter, Clown
10-19 Storyteller, Minstrel, Journeyman, Initerant, Jokester
20-29 Tale Singer, Dancer, Crier, Vagapond, Prankster
30-49 Balladeer, Bard, Courier, Gypsy, Buffoon
50-69 Songsmith, Tale Weaver, Orator, Musician, Jester

275-299 Rhapsodist, Thespian, Lull Weaver, Blade Singer, Harlequin

Hello everyone,

Let me first say it's nice to be back again, albeit under circumstances that are less than stellar for the Guild. I add my voice to all of those who wish Melodia well in the future, and thank her for being a part of all things Bard here in DR. Despite anyone's personal thoughts, we all stood together and that's how things should be remembered. Nuff said.

Also, thank you Maelona for jumping on the boards, and letting everyone know I was on leave. I have been away for a little while now, dealing with some personal buisness and was about to return when I heard the news. I apologize for not letting you all know I was gone, but I had hoped to slip away and back before I was missed. Lesson learned there.

The next few weeks are going to be kinda rushed as I catch up on things and see what's needing to be delt with immediately, what's pending, etc. We will still keep the meeting date and time we have scheduled, and plan to have a full update and chat about what's up. After discussing things with Deryka and seeing your suggestions, I think we'll be going with an open meeting so anyone can attend, but keep the list for questions to Bards only.

<scratches his head> I think that's all for now, if I've missed anything I'll just make another post tomorrow or something -- I just wanted to let you all know I'm still part of the team and not going anywhere.

Warmest Regards,

--Hoome

I've made a change or two that I thought you would like to know about.

We now have a Titles folder to do your discussing in. The folder is the old Rules folder and I have left all the old rules messages in there so you can go back and see them before they disappear. Deryka and I talked and this Titles folder will only be up for a very very short time. Make the best of it. Don't argue, don't fight, don't flame. I reserve the right to yank the whole folder and cease message board conversation about the Titles if behavior doesn't stay pleasant and constructive.

Thanks again to all the GM's who stopped in to answer questions (GM's Cadaya and Valdrik), as well as the host of others who showed up for the merryment.

And thank you all for attending and sharing your voices.

Heya guys! Here's a re-post of the in-game News 3 3, which I mentioned at the outset of last night's meeting. Enjoy! :)

Deryka

------------------------------------

[6/29/2001] DESIGN AN INSTRUMENT CONTEST!

That's right, you heard it -- design an instrument for us! There are a few things you will want to keep in mind when designing your instrument, so please read the following rules.

 1) Only the first entry submitted by each Bard will be considered for the contest. This contest is only open to Bards of the fifth circle and above.

 2) Entry must contain the following information in it: Character Name, Date Submitted, and whether the Bard is in DragonRealms Prime (Prime meaning Standard or Premium subscription) or DragonRealms Platinum. Entries MUST be submitted by midnight August 1st, Pacific time.

 3) Entries should be sent to DR-HOOME@PLAY.NET and DR-DERYKA@PLAY.NET, and will only be accepted if they are enclosed in the body of the email or attached with a TXT file. All other email will not even be read.

 4) Entries must be instruments of a type that can already be found in the lands of Elanthia. For example, you could have a shaman's drum (but not a dancer's drum), or you could have a lyre (but not a harp). I strongly encourage all Bards wishing to participate on the contest to gain listings of available instruments either from peers or from traveling to all shops themselves, in order to better acquaint yourselves with the variety of instruments already available.

 5) Instruments may consist of a TAP description and a LOOK description, if the designer so desires. An example of each type of description is:

   TAP: a silk-stringed rosewood lute
LOOK: Silverwillow chips are inlaid around the soundhole to form the image of a long-tailed phoenix.

Some things to keep in mind when designing your instruments:
   - Try to keep your designs realistic in regards to how the instrument is made: Wind instruments wouldn't function with cutwork in them, for example, nor would tambourines work if they did not have some sort of skin on them.
   - Try to keep your designs realistic in regards to embellishments: Mirlitons and other such small instruments likely would not have room to bear elaborate embellishments and adornments unless the design was handled very carefully.
   - Try to keep in mind the materials you use: If your instrument is forged platinum with sapphire and diamond inlay, it would be a gorgeous instrument -- but a very expensive one as well. Should the winner's designs ever be sold to the Bardic public, they may be beyond most Bards' reach.

It is not necessary that Bards adhere strictly to all these points, but they are instead intended merely as guidelines to aid you in designing your instruments.

 6) There will be five winners selected in DragonRealms Prime and one winner in DragonRealms Platinum, within two months after the final date for submitting entries has passed. (This is dependant upon the number of entries received, and subject to change after the final judging has taken place.) Each winner will win a copy of their finished instrument and one free alteration of a case for it. Alterations are available on descriptions only.

 7) Disclaimer: (you knew there would be one) Winning instruments may need to be changed slightly, for editing purposes, when it comes to actually making them. All submitted entries become the intellectual property of Simutronics Corp.

 8) There is no guarantee that the winning instruments will be chosen to be sold to the Bardic public, but there is a chance that they may. In this case, we reserve the right to alter winning instruments (beyond what possible alterations they may have incurred when they were gifted to the winners as their prizes) in order to make them more realistic for sale by a merchant.

 9) Any questions should be sent to DR-DERYKA@PLAY.NET.

Reposting from the in-game News. :)

[7/7/2001] Bard Guild Meeting (Take two!)

Heya Folks! We're planning another Guild-wide Bard Meeting scheduled for Saturday, September 1st, 9pm EST. This is a follow-up meeting from June's full Guild meeting, and will only be open to Bards. Plan for a decent length of time for announcements and Q&A, nowhere near as long a marathon as last time <g>.

The MEETING verb will be open from two weeks before the meeting until two days before it, to allow you to enter in pre-meeting questions. If you have any trouble using this verb at all, feel free to drop a post by the DragonRealms Message Boards, The Bards' Conservatory topic, the Bard-Related Events folder. If you end up mis-entering your question, check back in a day or two to enter it again, because we'll be deleting those entries that mis-entered.

Mark that date on your calenders!

Now, stop dying so you don't need to know this! <prods>

Subject  New List of Approved Bardic Titles (236)
Heya Bards!

Listed below are the new approved titles for Bards spanning circles 5 to 150. As you can see, 150th circle is the new 'cap' for mastery of the guild, so some of the current titles have been rearranged around to compensate for this. We've tried to maintain as many titles as we could in their old positions, but went with what felt like a proper progression of titles.

Titles relating to instrument proficiency have not been forgotten, but they will eventually be bestowed in a manner other than these that are based upon circles. <g> We wanted to use a lot more titles than we currently could, and this seemed the best way to be able to use them all.

Any questions, problems, complaints, suggestions, etc should be placed in the Titles folder. :)

Hoome and Derkya

150+: Composer, True Bard, Lore Keeper, Sonus Sunderer, Aes-Amachi, Myth Weaver

Note: Composer is an approved title, but we've alternates we're considering that are still waiting on approval.

Subject  Titles Released (240)
Greetings again!

Several title-related announcements:

First off -- as of this afternoon the title list as proposed is going live (I'll list it here again at the end of the post). I cannot say enough how pleased I was to have such incredibly thoughtful posts regarding Titles, of which many suggested some very excellent suggestions. When it came down to it, it felt appropriate to leave things as proposed than to (essentially) try to rework the progression. I wish I could have accomodated everyone's wishes, but sometimes you go with what you feel is best and that's what I've done.

Second -- Will these be all the titles ever? No-way. I have planned to get more titles in with other systems when they get live: specialists in instruments, those who get involved with instrument creation, etc. I can also see some quest-delivered titles as well as ways to have special titles while performing in theaters. This is just the start.

Lastly -- If your suggested titles didn't make it (and you miss some of the old ones) they more than likely will end up coming out in one of the above items, none of which I would have without all of your help and input. Onward!

Heya Bardly folks!

The temporary experience boost to SING, CHANT, and CHORUS is in place, and we even scaled it a little bit so as you get somewhat older you learn more than if you were fresh out of Singing 101. This fix is in there until we get a real performance system worked out.

As always, any bugs or problems with this change should be put in the appropriate folders or BUGged while in-game. Enjoy!

PS We added another little something to them too, but we'll let you figure that out on your own. Hee!

Subject  Guild Requirements (243)
Greetings!

Ok, here's the skinny on guild reqs and what changes I'd like to make and what needs to be adjusted. *NOTE*: This is not set in stone but is the overall idea of what I want to change. I haven't even looked at the code to adjust stuff nor have I asked for this to be approved. Given that, this is only an open discussion with ya'll to fine tune things.

1st off, the Lore calculation -- Total: xxxx in 9 included skills, averaged as 8)

By changing this to 9/9 we get a shift in total lore (based on how the #'s pan out) up or down. I'd like to keep this as close as possible as it was before. What I'm looking at now would be a staggered approach where it's a little more lore up to 30th and ending slightly less towards the upper levels (70ish) and being within 8 ranks of what's needed at 100th. I'm pretty good with this based on the other changes I'd like to see, read on...

2nd, Changes to Combat Reqs:

One of the major inequities down the line is the higher amount of weapons over defense Bards end up with since many can go to fight and blow away critters as fast as they can. What I'm looking at is reducing the 2nd weapon (or leaving it the same 2.5 at 30th) and boosting the parry req. This will mean more defense work in general which will move evasion and armor by just standing with critters more. I'm trying to stay away from giving requirements in terciary skill sets which is what led me to this idea.

3rd, changes to Magic Reqs:

We're magic secondary and have a pretty good stake in things that are coming down the pike, and our magic reqs are pretty easy (except for the 1st few circles. I can see this as an overall going up and maybe a light MD req as well.

4th, and last, Lore:

Overall with the 1st item, I think we have a pretty solid number for overall lore, but IMO some of the specific reqs were really chewed down alot when we had the last Req adjustment. I believe we should have a small increase to teaching or at least keep having the current req carry beyond where it ends now. I'm also not opposed to a single instrument req past 30th, something minor like 2 ranks instead of the dual 4 we had up to 30th.

Ok, there you have it, my thoughts for changes to balance things out for now and for the long term. I'm putting this stuff out here so we can chew this over and also so you can ask or voice your thoughts at the meeting. The lovely Deryka will be opening the MEETING verb for you today as well, but I'll let her tell you more about that! PLEASE post your comments to this in the "Questions and Answers on Guild Requirements" Folder.

Regards,

--Hoome

Folks,

There is a chance that the instrument design contest entries will not be judged as per the deadline outlined in the contest rules. This is for a variety of reasons, and remains only a chance. I just wanted to give you fair warning as to this, and the assurance that the entries *will* get judged.

I still have copies of all submitted entries, and even have copies of each of those instruments already made in my rooms. If it comes to us wishing to open up a merchant with the winning instruments, it'll be a simple matter of picking out the chosen ones and setting things in motion to get it out there.

In addition, there may be some delay in Hoome or I getting back to you on specific issues on the boards. Hoome himself is going to be out of the loop for a while because the workload at his fulltime job just jumped exponentially, and certain members of the staff are also out of touch (which is as it should be, right now). We'll continue to read and respond as we may.

If anyone needs a more rapid response on any sort of issue, my emailbox is always open, and you can put DRDeryka on your buddy list to send instant message with. I may not always be able to answer on the spot, but if I see the IM I will get back to you ASAP.

<hugs guildsibs> Deryka

Heya folks!

Thanks for being so patient with us. <grin> The winners for the design-an-instrument contest are:

Drippy, for his drubbed lyre. Raziaar, for his dyed crystal flute. Espritia, for her ritual drum. Lareine, for her liquer-bottle flutes. Keia, for her steelstring mandolin.

The full descriptions I'm purposefully withholding. <grin> You'll recognize them if you see them, trust me.

Due to the very low volume of entries from DragonRealms Platinum, no winner was chosen from there. All winners were, at the time of entry, Bards from DragonRealms Prime.

Winners, you will be contacted about how to receive your prizes (which are a copy of your winning instrument and an alteration of a case for it), so please don't Assist or ask for a Referral regarding them. Congratulations to you all, and thank you everyone who entered!!!

Heyas!

Just wanted to wish you all a happy Thanksgiving, with all that's been going on in the world of late we've alot to be thankful for.

Just to give ya'll a little perk, I slipped in a few small changes this morning just for grins. The lovely...er...well, the noisy Silvyrfrost isn't as noisy, I slowed her down a little bit (all the excitement of people running in and out was getting to her).

Second, you'll find the Eye and Grace a little easier to start up. You no longer need to do the 'Bardic two step', since you can start either song even if someone else is singing it already in that room.

Enjoy the extended weekend folks!

Just popping in for a quick note: I've been absent lately due to the death of my computer. It's currently in the shop awaiting a tech to tell me just what is wrong and how many arms and legs it's going to cost to fix it. <g> (Hoome offered to fix it, but he lives too far away even for a moonmage to 'gate.)

In the meantime, I've usurped the computer of another family member and am hoping to get together with Hoome to discuss where we stand lately, and see if the meeting date needs adjusting at all what with the delays caused by my absence and the normal holiday madness. I'll keep you folks as updated as I can, but since I'm back on dialup and don't want to tie up the lines, it's gonna be touch and go for a while.

I'm sorry about not being able to get a note off to you beforehand folks. :/ Stay in touch.

Hoome and I've discussed the meeting and what we want to happen, and come to the conclusion that the meeting date will indeed need to be pushed back to either the 26th of January, or 2nd of February. The meeting time itself, 9pm EST, would stay the same. Please let us know your preferences for either date either in the Responses version of this topic, or under Bard-Related Events.

The MEETING verb will be updated once I've heard from some of you guys as to what the new date should be.

A long-needed fix was made to the REMOVE mechanics in the Crossing guildhouse and put in place tonight. People removed from the Crossing guildhouse by the use of the REMOVE verb will now be prevented from re-entering through the bard-only portals for a span of time based on ... well ... you'll figure it out on your own anyway, best not spoil it for you. <g> But it's not forever, and it's not five minutes, and that's all the hints you're going to get.

A bug in the messaging of removing people from the guild was fixed as well, so that it'll message the room as it should.

Needless to say, anyone abusing these mechanics in any way will be firmly squished by Harvey. Or have some other nameless torture heaped upon them. I am SO not kidding. The other GMs have been told this as well.

Any questions or problems with this should be posted in the appropriate folders.

And if I forgot anything, I'm sure Hoome'll remind me of what it was. <curls up and snores>

Greetings, Bards!

It gives me great pleasure to announce the recent addition of a third GameMaster to the Bard team. In addition to your very own GMs Deryka and Hoome, you now have an Assistant Developer who is so fresh out of the packaging that he doesn't even have a name yet.

Now, normally I don't announce these things quite so soon after someone is hired. Who's to know whether he'll work out in the long term, for example, or whether we'll just decide to stuff him and use him as a foot-stool instead? However, I wanted you to know that the promised addition to the team has been bagged and kidnapped, and is in GM training even as we speak.

We'll introduce him to you as soon as he's allowed out in public. :)

Hiya!

Four items have been implemented after the Bard meeting.

We've adjusted the Resolve to message you if you succeed vs someone in hiding (and lose), since it gives ya'll some twitches. It will not say who they are, but since you feel it you should know it.

There was a naughty bug with Nexus, where it wouldn't let you affect mana in a room that was technically 'grouped' with others. Basically, it thought it was the same room, so people would get the message that they couldn't force the mana in the room. Thanks to the lovely Deryka that bug is outta here.

The long standing bug with Percussion instruments and bonding is history. If you're fully bonded it should message every time you clean, and the process of bonding should be a little quicker. It's still slower than winds or strings, but better than it was before.

Lastly, we've a new verb for ya'll, PRACTICE. It's a neat little RP tool that any guild can use...but others don't look quite as good as we do. When you get to play with this later, feel free to post suggestions in the Bard Folder (general discussions), I'm more than able to expand this.

regards,

-Hoome

Congratulations, instrument contest winners. If you were the creator of a winning entry in the Design An Instrument contest, you should be receiving an email shortly from me detailing how to collect your prize. If you don't receive an email, it's because the email address listed in your billing information isn't set up right.

I'm also going to be snagging folks in-game when at all possible if the email bounces back to me. <grin> If you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to drop me an email at DR-DERYKA@play.net.

Again, congrats folks!

Due to popular request, the 'parched' option has been added to the PRACTICE verb. Hoome wanted to let me know that he's going to put off putting in any instrument options until he reworks the code for wounds to his liking.

If you have any more thoughts about additions to PRACTICE, feel free to drop them in the Gen Discussions or Bard Abilities folders. Have fun guys. :)

Subject  Are you BLUFFing? (263)
Thanks to the wonderful coding by Rigby and the talented writing of Cadaya, we present to you the BLUFF verb for your use. This is a verb that has some unique possibilities for Bards...

 >bluff
Hah! As a Bard, you can BLUFF like so...

  BLUFF <player|item|critter>
  BLUFF <self>
BLUFF DISTRACT to gain a better chance at hiding.
BLUFF AMAZE to put on a charismatic show.
BLUFF DEAD to play dead. *** Be warned, this could get you killed! ***

Have fun with it guys, and feel free to report any bugs you find using either the BUG verb or the appropriate Bard Bugs folder. :) Some of it will be taxing to use, or require a certain amount of skill, so make sure that you play around with it a bit to see how it works before depending on it in a hectic situation.

Speaking of hectic situations, beware of using BLUFF DEAD where it can get you killed. If you are NOT successful in convincing others of your performance you may find yourself laying down, at melee, and in RT. Your best bet is to get with a group of friends and play with it first to see how it works.

This is what Hoome, Maelona, and I have been having so much fun testing lately. :)

 <hugs alla ya bardies>

PS I still say that BLUFF SELF makes you look like Gollum. <raspberries various GMs>

Hello My name is Redryn. I will be taking over as Your new board monitor. I am fresh out of training. I hope you all don't mind but the only time I will post is when I have to get out my warhammer and beat the posts back in to line for you all, or at least when Hoome throw his sock at me. Just keep up the good work on the board and you all will most likely never hear much out of me.

Hiyas everyone,

I've a few things to address for ya'll, so here goes:

First and foremost, I made the promise to get you a new song by today, and I have not delivered on that -- I give you my deepest apology for not meeting that deadline, and for leaving you hanging untill today without an update. The time I've been able to devote here to the work I've committed to was eaten up by some rather troublesome otherworldly issues, much to my dismay. The specifics of it all are really irrelevent here, the result it comes down to is I blew it for ya'll.

I know this is a dissapointment to you, as it is to me, for new items such as this are what you've wanted for quite some time. The next question on your minds has to be, "ok, well...when then?" My commitment to you all is to have this out as quickly as possible, and will post any and all updates on my progress.

Please accept my sincere regrets on this one folks, I'll do everything I can to correct this.

Warmest Regards,

--H

Category Talk to Simutronics (34) Topic GM Announcements (5) By DR-CECCO from PLAY.NET On Apr 6, 2002 at 00:32 Subject The Revamp - New Message Boards to go live 8th April 2002 (456)

Dear Posters,

As you may remember, we called for suggestions for a new set of Boards. All suggestions have been compiled and discussed, and the new Prime Boards are now created. They are set to go live on Monday 8th April at 2 pm.

The Prime Boards will retain their usual name, "DragonRealms Message Boards". These current Boards will be renamed. We aren't sure what they'll be labeled as, but tentatively we're referring to them as DragonRealms: the archives and will remain available in read-only mode for a period of one month.

These current boards will be put on read only, so all posters will be able to pick up the old threads and continue them on the new Boards.

After the one month period of read-only, the Archives will not be available to non-staff. Therefore, if there are any posts you especially want to keep, please use the next month to make appropriate copies of the posts.

After a period of two months, the archives will be deleted to clear disk space.

The new Boards are organised in a slightly different way, but hopefully in an intuitive way. A poster will need to customise their views to ignore the appropriate folders not relevant to their reading patterns.

We hope you enjoy the new boards

Cecco
- Message Boards Supervisor.
