Your mind hears Dreamheart thinking, "the Concert tonight starts in just minutes at Baearholt's Taproom, out the northeast gate until you get to the twisting trail!"

Taleweaver Dreamheart just arrived.

Veterator chants:

"Ladies and gentlemen, DREAMHEART IN THE HOUSE"

Dreamheart says, "Heyo everyone! Welcome to the End of the Week Concert."

Dreamheart says, "Tonight our performer is the lovely and talented Firannion."

Dreamheart says, "There are some refreshments on the bar..."

Dreamheart exclaims, "Try to keep your noise down during the performances, of course, and remember, bards love sparkly things!"

[back to Set List]

Firannion says, "All right, I'm going to start off with an invocation to Faenella, called "Bardic Prayer.""

Firannion says, "Sung a cappella."

Firannion clears her throat.

Firannion ponders the ceiling for a few moments as she composes herself for an uncharacteristically serious song.

Firannion slowly sings in a soprano voice:

    "Goddess of the glowing hair

      Lady, lift my voice

     Hearken to a bardic prayer

      Lady, lift my voice"

Firannion loudly sings in a soprano voice:

    "Lady, lift my voice aloft

Breathe within me strong and soft

Sound your music clear and oft

      Lady, lift my voice"

Firannion wistfully sings in a soprano voice:

    "Sweet Faenella, guide me still

      Lady, lift my heart

Teach me how to work your will

      Lady, lift my heart"

Firannion emphatically sings in a soprano voice:

    "Lady, lift my heart aloft

Drum within me strong and soft

Sound your music clear and oft

      Lady, lift my heart"

Firannion lovingly sings in a soprano voice:

"Help me use these gifts you sent

      Lady, lift my soul

     Let me be your instrument

      Lady, lift my soul"

Firannion confidently sings in a soprano voice:

    "Lady, lift my soul aloft

Play within me strong and soft

Sound your music clear and oft

      Lady, lift my soul"

(Firannion lets the last note trail off as she drops her head in a gesture of reverence.)

Firannion bows her head and grows still for a moment.

[back to Set List]

Firannion ponders.

Firannion says, "Well, for those who don't know me, I'll continue with a bit of autobiography."

Firannion says, "I don't sing this one much anymore, since it no longer accurately reflects my attitudes towards certain subjects."

Firannion says, "But it explains a bit of my background."

Firannion smiles.

Firannion says, "I'll be needing a chorus."

Firannion gets a cherrywood violin from inside her blue brocade backpack.

Firannion gets a cherrywood bow from inside her blue brocade backpack.

(Firannion begins to saw out a deceptively jaunty melody on her violin.)

Firannion kindly says, "join me on the chorus, fellow Bards: It's easy enough to pick up."

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"There's many a lad has caught my eye

Since I was a wee young lassie

And many a one has asked me why

I let them all go past me"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"My reasons I have often told

A tale both sad and long, O

Now, by the gods, I'll make so bold

To put it in a song, O"

Firannion sternly exclaims, "Here comes the chorus, now pay attention!"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "Green grows the georin grass

And the deobar tree so shady

But greener still the heart of a lass

Who'll put her faith in a laddie"

(Firannion's eyes grow hazy as her mind wanders back in time.)

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"My mother was her family's pride

       Their heir and elder daughter

Her dower, farmlands rich and wide

       Between the wood and water"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"My mother's voice was sweet and fair

       Admired of every laddie

Her heart was light and free from care

       Until she met my daddy"

Firannion exclaims, "Sing with me this time!"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Green grows the georin grass

And the deobar tree so shady

But greener still the heart of a lass

Who'll put her faith in a laddie"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"My father was a merry blade

       A handsome lad, and witty

A proper bard he might have made

       In Shard or Crossing city"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "But idleness was Father's vice

       His sire was surely Idon

He loved his ale, he loved his dice

       And any willing maiden"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Green grows the georin grass

And the deobar tree so shady

But greener still the heart of a lass

Who'll put her faith in a laddie"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"The day that he and Mother met

His friends to him did say, O

"The lad who doth her dower get

Need never work a day, O""

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"She loved him for his bonny face

His voice, his wit, his charm, O

And with a wastrel's winning ways

He wooed her for her farm, O"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Green grows the georin grass

And the deobar tree so shady

But greener still the heart of a lass

Who'll put her faith in a laddie"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"So glad was she this lad to wed

So soon came she to grieving

She bore four children to his bed

And slaved from dawn 'til evening"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"While he within the tavern kept

With flowing glass in hand, O

To pay off Father's gambling debt

She sold off half her land, O"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Green grows the georin grass

And the deobar tree so shady

But greener still the heart of a lass

Who'll put her faith in a laddie"

A tear runs down Firannion's face.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"And now my mother's bent and grey

She scarcely sings at all, O

My father lies beneath the clay

Slain in a tavern brawl, O"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "When womanhood I did attain

I roved in quest of gold, O

In hopes we someday might regain

The lands that Mother sold, O"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Green grows the georin grass

And the deobar tree so shady

But greener still the heart of a lass

Who'll put her faith in a laddie"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"So wooers all, pass by, pass by

       The Realms alone I'll wander

And when a charming lad I spy

       My mother's fate I'll ponder"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"My heart is neither made of stone

       Nor broken beyond mending

But I'd rather walk this world alone

       Than share my mother's ending"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Green grows the georin grass

And the deobar tree so shady

But greener still the heart of a lass

Who'll put her faith in a laddie"

Firannion teasingly exclaims, "Let's have the chorus one last time, with everyone joining in!"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

"Oh, green grows the georin grass

And the deobar tree so shady

But greener still the heart of a lass

Who'll put her faith in a laddie"

[back to Set List]

Firannion says, "The next one...well, I'm not sure what to say about the next one."

Firannion shrugs.

Firannion says, "The Boobrie."

Firannion says, "And now for a lesson in the natural history of Elanthia."

(Firannion produces a mysterious object resembling two shortened telescopes joined together, holds it up to her eyes and scans the audience.)

Firannion says, "No, this is not a sacred talisman of the Moon Mage Guild, but a clever device called "binoculars" which is most useful in observing the avifauna of the Realms."

Firannion says, "I have been spending some time of late in the foul swamps to the east of Riverhaven, the home of a most unusual and inordinately cranky feathered creature known as the boobrie."

Firannion smiles as she tucks the binoculars away in a pocket of her pack.

Firannion says, "If you have not yet had the misfortune to make this bird's acquaintance, here are a few facts you should know about its nasty habits."

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"Gather round and hear me sing

     You who go adventuring

And I'll share some good advice that I have heard

     If adventure you will seek

     Then beware the baleful beak

Of our fancy-feathered friend, the boobrie bird"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"If you're going for a romp

     In the noisome Zaulfung swamp

Look around and soon the boobrie you will spy

     You will doubtless be impressed

     By her shining feathered crest

And her long sharp beak is sure to catch your eye"

Firannion winces.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "The boobrie-O, the boobrie-O

     She treats the traveler rudely-O

Because she has forgotten how to fly

     To alleviate her pique

She would gladly stick her beak

In your arm or in your leg or in your eye!"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "She's a most unpleasant sort

And her temper it is short

For she wishes she could bid this place goodbye

     She detests her habitat

     But she can't accomplish that

Because she has forgotten how to fly"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "Her sharp stiletto bill

Goes through leather like a drill

It'll slash your flesh to ribbons like a knife

She can pierce vambrace or greave

Like it was a lacy sleeve

Then the hungry bird will drain you of your life"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "The boobrie-O, the boobrie-O

     She treats the traveler rudely-O

Because she has forgotten how to fly

     To alleviate her pique

She would gladly stick her beak

In your arm or in your leg or in your eye!"

(Firannion executes a reasonable facsimile of the boobrie's mating dance.)

Firannion cackles!

Firannion paces back and forth.

Firannion ducks her head.

Firannion ducks her head.

Firannion ducks her head.

Firannion flails her arms about.

Firannion preens.  Someone's pleased with herself!

Firannion cackles like a lunatic!

Firannion begins flapping her arms around wildly.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "When Faenella made the birds

     Too melodious for words

Her holy favor passed the boobrie by

     Who among us wouldn't squawk

If we always had to walk

Knowing that our dear old grannies used to fly?"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "Mother boobrie tells her brood,

"'Tis your birthright to be rude

After all, you cannot fly and cannot sing."

Hear her egg her nestlings on:

     "Just remember when I'm gone

You could poke somebody's eye out with that thing!""

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "The boobrie-O, the boobrie-O

     She treats the traveler rudely-O

Because she has forgotten how to fly..."

Firannion inhales a great swallow of air.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"So take heed of what I speak

And be careful what you seek

     Don't imagine that she's weak

Or expect her to be meek

     Though her plumage is unique

     Being flightless, she's a freak

     To alleviate her pique

She would gladly stick her beak

In your arm or in your leg or in your eye!"

Firannion pants.

Firannion grins like an idiot.

Firannion curtsies.

[back to Set List]

Firannion says, "Time to get serious, now."

Firannion clears her throat.

Firannion gets a maple lute from inside her instrument case.

Firannion says, "Many of you already know this song from singing it in the Lute Room for Wren."

Firannion says, "Please sing it with me again, and maybe she will hear us."

(Firannion strums a strong, defiant march on her own maple lute.)

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Within a hidden, hallowed room

We wait here singing in the gloom

And hear above the tramp of doom

       Defenders of the Lute"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

"Where bloody hands would seize the Wren

Stand valiant maids and worthy men

Prepared to die, and die again

       Defenders of the Lute"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "About the city traitors go

     Conspiring to placate the foe

     Defiant heroes tell them, "No!"

       Defenders of the Lute"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

"All in the sewer's endless night

Join ranger, healer, bard and knight

Sworn comrades in one cause to fight

       Defenders of the Lute"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "The slaughtered halfling children's wail

     Arises over Arthe Dale

We know our vigil must not fail

       Defenders of the Lute"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

"Like days of yore, when stilled was song

Our foe is pitiless and strong

Our hearts ache to avenge the wrong

       Defenders of the Lute"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

"With faith that dread can ne'er exhaust

We shall stand firm, nor count the cost

For if it falls, then all is lost

       Defenders of the Lute"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

"So may its purpose be fulfilled

This sacred heirloom of our guild

In every birth some blood is spilled

       Defenders of the Lute"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

"If we survive, past hope and fear

We pledge to gather once a year

     Recounting all that happened here

       Defenders of the Lute"

Firannion puts her lute in her instrument case.

[back to Set List]

Firannion gets a silk-stringed pyi-pya from inside her blue brocade backpack.

Firannion ponders.

Firannion says, "This one is hard for me. Bear with me."

Firannion bows her head and grows still for a moment.

Firannion ponders her fingering as she begins to play a stately, mournful melody on her pyi-pya.

Firannion inhales a great swallow of air.

Firannion hauntingly sings in a soprano voice:

"No bleeding wound would you descry

If you should peer beneath my mask

The heart bears more than meets the eye

The only cure I dare not ask"

Firannion painfully sings in a soprano voice:

"The gods have dealt a bitter blow

Too grievous for the healer's art

No herb, no salve can mend my woe

I need an empath of the heart"

Firannion longingly sings in a soprano voice:

"Are you the one whose touch can bless

And free my soul from dire distress

And make me whole in every part?

Are you my empath of the heart?"

(Firannion struggles for self-control as the song stirs up raw, painful memories.)

Firannion tenderly sings in a soprano voice:

"Within your eyes this heart can see

       A kindred spirit sorely tried

Who bears with grace and dignity

An ache you ever seek to hide"

Firannion wistfully sings in a soprano voice:

"Then join me, you who walk alone

       So well-disguised, so deeply scarred

To heal your hurts would heal my own

If I were empath of your heart"

Firannion smiles sadly to herself, as if gingerly replacing a fragile, imaginary treasure on the shelf of her memory.

Firannion regretfully sings in a soprano voice:

"Am I the one whose touch can bless

And free your soul from dire distress

And make you whole in every part?

Am I your empath of the heart?"

Firannion sighs.

(Firannion plays through the chorus one last time, her hands seeming to tremble as she restrains the intensity of her plucking so as not to break the delicate silk strings of the pyi-pya. She leaves the last note hanging in the air, like a question she cannot help asking though dreading the answer.)

[back to Set List]

Firannion says, "Well, I'm certainly not the only one who has walked the road of heartbreak. "

Firannion says, "And here is a very sad tale of two others."

Firannion puts her pyi-pya in her blue brocade backpack.

Firannion recites:

"The song I am about to sing is 'Barbarian Ellyn', an ancient ballad in the comickall-tragickall mode."

Firannion says, "No doubt the tune is familiar to you. "

Firannion says, "In your travels you may have heard something similar to these lyrics, but this is the original version."

Firannion smugly says, "I wrote it myself, in an earlier incarnation...as the blind Gor'Tog harper, Turlough O'Nonymous."

Firannion gets some georin pulp from inside her blue brocade backpack.

(Firannion turns her back and rubs the georin pulp on her face and scalp, the better to impersonate a Gor'Tog narrator.)

Firannion puts her pulp in her blue brocade backpack.

Firannion smiles a greenish grin as she turns back to face her audience.

Firannion clears her throat.

Firannion inhales a great swallow of air.

Firannion sweetly sings in a soprano voice:

"In Tiger Clan, where I was born

     A Gor'Tog maid was dwelling

A sturdy beauty, I'll be sworn

     Her name, Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion lovingly sings in a soprano voice:

"As in the merry springtime air

     When green buds are a-swelling

Far greener were the cheeks so fair

     Of sweet Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion playfully sings in a soprano voice:

"Like burning charcoal were her eyes

     Her biceps like a melon

     Her playmates called her Thunderthighs

     This young Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion teasingly sings in a soprano voice:

"She led the lads a merry chase

     Their overtures repelling

Not one of them could win the race

     For fleet Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion sternly sings in a soprano voice:

"To words of love she paid no heed

     The only tales worth telling

Were tales of fierce and warlike deeds

     Thought stout Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion shakes her head.

Firannion wistfully sings in a soprano voice:

"'Twas on a dank and frosty morn

     When puddles were congealing

As fine a youth as e'er was born

     Did court Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion sighs.

Firannion confidently sings in a soprano voice:

"Up to this maiden's barnyard gate

     He ardently came calling

He boldly thought to be the mate

     Of sweet Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion mockingly sings in a soprano voice:

"She looked this handsome warrior o'er

     Her high contempt concealing

Saying, 'Who comes knocking at the door

     Of young Barbarian Ellyn?'"

Firannion sheepishly sings in a soprano voice:

    "'Erwilian it is my name

I'm not sure of the spelling

I am drawn hither by the fame

     Of fair Barbarian Ellyn'"

Firannion tenderly sings in a soprano voice:

"This youth mistook her fit of pique

     For warm romantic feeling

Stepped forth to kiss the blushing cheek

     Of fierce Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion falls over.

Firannion weakly sings in a soprano voice:

"He lost his footing in the mud

'Twas surely love he fell in

He lay there stunned, this Gor'Tog stud

     Before Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion weakly sings in a soprano voice:

"He lost his footing in the mud

'Twas surely love he fell in

He lay there stunned, this Gor'Tog stud

     Before Barbarian Ellyn  "

Firannion coyly sings in a soprano voice:

"She raised him from the icy patch

     His full physique revealing

He stood there every inch a match

     For proud Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion excitedly sings in a soprano voice:

"He clasped her in his brawny arms

     Inflamed by all her yelling

Not thinking he might come to harm

     He kissed Barbarian Ellyn  "

Firannion harshly sings in a soprano voice:

"A broken jaw, a mangled face

     Six bleeders, cuts and swelling

He paid full dearly to embrace

     Berserk Barbarian Ellyn "

Firannion hopelessly sings in a soprano voice:

"No word of comfort would she give

No empath would she call in

Erwilian lost his will to live

     Without Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion painfully sings in a soprano voice:

"'Bring me my shroud, my plain pine box

     With Eylhaar I'll be dwelling

Farewell, my comrades, and a pox

     On cruel Barbarian Ellyn'"

Firannion shudders.

Firannion darkly sings in a soprano voice:

"And as she stomped away in wrath

     She heard the death-bell knelling

     'Erwilian walks the Starry Path

     Alas, Barbarian Ellyn!'"

Firannion's shoulders bow as if under some great burden.

Firannion regretfully sings in a soprano voice:

    "'Twas neither sorrow nor remorse

That did this Gor'Tog gal in

Bubonic plague, it made a corpse

     Of fair Barbarian Ellyn"

Firannion gets a wild rose from inside her blue brocade backpack.

Firannion sadly sings in a soprano voice:

"They buried her by Trothfang's shrine

     Erwilian beside her

From his grave grew a rose so fine

     From Ellyn's grew a briar"

Firannion waves a wild rose around.

Firannion dreamily sings in a soprano voice:

"They grew and grew o'er Trothfang's shrine

'Til they could grow no higher

The rose reached out to intertwine..."

(Firannion pauses for effect...)

Firannion mischievously sings in a soprano voice:

    "...And was strangled by...the briar."

A tear runs down Firannion's face.

Firannion curtsies.

[back to Set List]

Firannion exclaims, "All right, I think we need a major change of pace here!"

Firannion says, "Hold onto your hats, folks. "

Firannion rubs her hands together.

(Firannion perches on the edge of the bar and swings herself up, flashing a well-toned bit of leg in the process.)

Firannion checks her footing.

Firannion bats her eyelashes.

Firannion sways gracefully about in an elegant dance.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"Oh, it's long that I've traveled the Realms all around

And wherever I go I can hear a sad sound

From the many who've lost or ne'er found what they've sought

For the breaking of hearts, I can't hear my own thoughts"

Firannion unravels her braid.

Firannion runs her fingers through her hair.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"For the ones who might want us are ones that we don't

And the ones that we want are the ones who just won't

So we dance for old Saemaus, by fits and by starts

To that sad syncopation, the breaking of hearts!"

Firannion shakes her hips, ringing the bells on her hip-chain.

(Firannion undulates her hips suggestively. Who does she think she is, Trul?)

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"There are many who swear they'll ne'er come to this pass

But when love calls your name, e'en the wisest turn ass

And you'll dance with the donkey, and play the buffoon

For there's no sitting down when the god calls the tune"

(Firannion shimmies like a mirage in the desert.)

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"When the ones who might want you are ones that you don't

And the one that you want is the one who just won't

Then you'll dance for old Saemaus, by fits and by starts

To that sad syncopation, the breaking of hearts!"

Firannion smiles boldly as she loosens her bodice and leans forward, affording you a clear glimpse of her artistic license.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"They'll be dancing all over, from Theren to Leth

Till their boots are worn thin, and they're all out of breath

Though the chorus is simple, the steps may be hard

And the name will have changed for those dancing in Shard"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"Where the ones who might want them are ones that they don't

And the ones that they want are the ones who just won't

There they'll dance for Smaragdaus, by fits and by starts

To that sad syncopation, the breaking of hearts!"

Firannion sighs.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"Now my heart it grows weary, my feet they grow sore

So I'll write no sad love songs for you any more

And I'll auction my heart and my virginity

To the lad who can write the best song about me!"

Firannion smiles slyly as she passes out quills, ink and parchment to the males in the audience.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"For the ones who might want me are ones that I don't

And the one who I want is the one who just won't

And I've danced for old Saemaus, by fits and by starts

To that sad syncopation, the breaking of hearts!"

(Firannion tap-dances a little coda to the tune of "Shave and a Haircut".)

Firannion does an impressive backflip with a slight twist!

Firannion winks.

Firannion curtsies.

Firannion smiles a silly grin as she hops nimbly down off the bar, landing lightly on her feet.

Firannion coyly says, "Ummm, I suppose it's only fair at this point to make a public announcement that the contest is over...and all prizes have been awarded."

Firannion blushes furiously!

Firannion says, "To tell the truth, there was only one entry..."

Firannion hesitantly says, "Perhaps I ought to rephrase that...Only one entrANT."

[back to Set List]

Firannion says, "All right. Next song."

Firannion says, "This one is also on the steamy side, so the faint of heart should leave now."

Firannion says, "The one this is for...knows who he is."

Firannion says, "It's called "Mage of Fire"...but it's NOT about Mibgluc."

(Firannion taps out a slow, mesmerizing, almost primitive rhythm on her bones and begins to chant along.)

Firannion darkly sings in a soprano voice:

"All my tears were spent in vain

All my hopes were at an end

Nothing left to feel but pain

Fragments of a heart to mend"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"So I reached to turn the page

     Asked the gods for clarity

Raised my eyes and spied a mage

     Practicing his arts on me"

Firannion smiles and closes her eyes as if visualizing some pleasing image.

Firannion longingly sings in a soprano voice:

"Can your spells a curse undo?

Mage of fire, mage of earth

Can you, with your touchstone true,

       Gauge a shattered spirit's worth?"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"Can you thaw my frozen dreams?

Mage of water, mage of air

Is your power what it seems?

If you can, then will you dare?"

Firannion sways gracefully about in an elegant dance.

Firannion dreamily sings in a soprano voice:

"With your lips you weave your spells

Lay me bare with just a glance

     Secret knowledge in you dwells

There is magic in your hands"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"Just a gesture gives me wings

Just a whisper fans the flame

     Dowse my deepest hidden springs

     Conjure love's forbidden name"

(Firannion sways rhythmically, as if in a trance.)

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"Can your spells a curse undo?

Mage of fire, mage of earth

Can you, with your touchstone true,

       Gauge a shattered spirit's worth?"

Firannion emphatically sings in a soprano voice:

"Can you thaw my frozen dreams?

Mage of water, mage of air

Is your power what it seems?

If you can, then will you dare?"

Firannion licks her lips.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "At your touch enchantment grows

Kisses pour like dark red wine

     Elemental mana flows

     From your body into mine"

Firannion teasingly sings in a soprano voice:

"When our powers meet and blend

     Your familiar I will be

     All your bidding I'll attend

     Only as it pleases me"

Firannion smiles a bit lasciviously.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"Can your spells a curse undo?

Mage of fire, mage of earth

Can you, with your touchstone true,

       Gauge a shattered spirit's worth?"

Firannion hauntingly sings in a soprano voice:

"Can you thaw my frozen dreams?

Mage of water, mage of air

Is your power what it seems?

If you can, then will you dare?"

(Firannion raises the bones over her head and lets the hypnotic beat trail off into a trill like the rattle of a snake.)

Firannion bows her head and grows still for a moment.

[back to Set List]

Firannion says, "Time to get silly again."

Firannion says, "There is a little story behind this song."

Firannion says, "I recently discovered that I was the subject of a false rumor."

Firannion says, "Someone accused me of singing nasty songs about her."

Firannion says, "At the time, it was completely untrue."

Firannion says, "But then I thought about it a while."

Firannion says, "And I decided that if I had to live with the slander, I might as well have the fun of what I was being accused of."

Firannion says, "That way it wouldn't go to waste, you see."

Firannion says, "So...I'm not going to name names, but many of you will know who this is about."

Firannion smiles.

Firannion smiles brightly as she starts up a rollicking fiddle tune, instantly recognizable from many an old folksong.

Firannion innocently sings in a soprano voice:

"When first I came to Crossing town, a Bardling yet unskilled

I met a lass who made her second home inside our Guild

Herself could scarcely play a note, her singing was off-key

"No Bard am I," she said, "I am a Trader with a D.""

Firannion winks.

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

    "Oh, a Trader with a D

That's what she said to me

And all along I thought she was

     A Trader with a D!"

Firannion cheerfully exclaims, "That's all there is to the chorus; Bards, sing it with me the next time it comes around!"

Firannion sarcastically sings in a soprano voice:

"This lass and I became good friends, it's hard to say just how

For while I spent my childhood yoking oxen to the plow

She learned to hold her little finger out while drinking tea

How different were this Bardling and this Trader with a D!"

Firannion smirks.

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Oh, a Trader with a D

That's what she said to me

And all along I thought she was

     A Trader with a D!"

Firannion mischievously sings in a soprano voice:

"My friend was fond of music, and she wished with all her heart

To make her reputation as a patron of the arts

She spent her gold to help us Bards almost as easily

As she could rake it in, this wealthy Trader with a D!"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Oh, a Trader with a D

That's what she said to me

And all along I thought she was

     A Trader with a D!"

Firannion sheepishly sings in a soprano voice:

"Now some folk thought me gullible to heed this lass at all

And other folk believed her padded purse held me in thrall

But who it is that buys the round, it matters naught to me

I sang her songs and drank her health, this Trader with a D!"

Firannion shrugs.

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Oh, a Trader with a D

That's what she said to me

And all along I thought she was

     A Trader with a D!"

Firannion enigmatically sings in a soprano voice:

"For when this lass was in her cups, she showed another side

She hinted of a scarlet past that now she'd like to hide

But what she said, you'll have to hear from someone else than me

I'll not betray my former friend, this Trader with a D!"

Firannion covers her mouth with her hand.

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Oh, a Trader with a D

That's what she said to me

And all along I thought she was

     A Trader with a D!"

(Firannion bows her violin briskly with many an ornamental flourish, dancing in and out of the flickering light as she shows off her technique for a bit.)

Firannion sadly sings in a soprano voice:

"But now, alas, there comes the sorry ending to my tale

She'll not be seen in taverns with the riffraff drinking ale

She fancies she's a member of the aristocracy

And snubs the Bards she once admired, this Trader with a D!"

Firannion shakes her head.

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Oh, a Trader with a D

That's what she said to me

And all along I thought she was

     A Trader with a D!"

Firannion innocently sings in a soprano voice:

"It's no surprise to anyone that Thieves have their own Guild

Assassins can be hired by those who need somebody killed

But I confess that I was shocked by this discovery

To realize that there's a Guild of Traitors with a T!"

A chorus of voices join with Firannion's leading soprano as she sings:

    "Oh, a Trader with a D

That's what she said to me

And all along I thought she was

     A Trader with a D!"

Firannion raises her hand.

(Firannion stops playing abruptly and sings the final chorus a cappella.)

Firannion mockingly sings in a soprano voice:

    "Oh, a Trader with a D

That's what she said to me

And all along she really meant

     A Traitor with a T!"

[back to Set List]

Firannion asks, "All right, I've kept you all here a long time. Shall we cut straight to the encore?"

Firannion says, "This one I'm kind of still working on, it may not be the final version."

Firannion gets a maple lute from inside her instrument case.

Firannion smiles crookedly as she adjusts her lute into an open tuning to recreate the ringing harmonics of a folksong.

Firannion listens carefully to the maple lute, plucking the strings.

(Firannion strums her lute at a moderate, lilting tempo, setting a thoughtful mood.)

Firannion calmly sings in a soprano voice:

    "Hearts, in love's first recognition

Fly as free as forest birds

Why must we so soon ensnare them

Bind them fast with honeyed words?"

Firannion darkly sings in a soprano voice:

"Many are the hearts held captive

Twisted by the oaths they swore

Many are the hearts grow stunted

     By that word, "Forevermore""

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"So do not swear by Honour grim

For I'll love none so stern as him

Do not swear by liege and lief

For passions wane, and time's a thief"

Firannion quietly sings in a soprano voice:

"Now you speak of love eternal

     Undiminished e'en in death

As you loved me, love another

Thus I'll pray with my last breath"

Firannion emphatically sings in a soprano voice:

"Never would I see your spirit

     Pruned like some espaliered tree

If misfortune e'er should part us

Know that you are always free"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"So do not swear by moon and star

Who cannot see the future far

Do not swear by head and hand

Lest fate undo what you have planned"

Firannion confidently sings in a soprano voice:

"Never could I wish to bind you

Never did I think to wed

All I have and am I'll give you

     Unashamed I'll share your bed"

Firannion wistfully sings in a soprano voice:

"If I find you still beside me

In the morning, make no vow

     Do not dwell upon tomorrow

Live today and love me now"

Firannion sings in a soprano voice:

"So do not swear by rose and ring

For love's no tame domestic thing

Do not swear for well or ill

But love me of your own free will!"

Firannion smiles serenely as she picks out the chorus once more. She lets the final strum ring for a long time, the last reverberations of the deep drone string seeming to soak into the very walls as they fade away.

(Firannion bows her head as she drops into a deep, graceful curtsy.)
