Heston Concert, 3/2/2002, Daerlynn Concert Series II, Arthe Hollow Inn

As transcribed by Mykk Dalys

It has been 368 years, 21 days since the Victory of Lanival the Redeemer.
It is the 1st month of Akroeg the Ram in the year of the Iron Toad.
It is currently winter and from here you can only see that it's daytime.

The sky is a sharp, clear blue.

[Arthe Hollow Inn, Common Room]
The room is filled with long, low tables and stools, where several people sit eating hearty bowls of Arthe Hollow's popular lamb stew. A large stone fireplace dominates one wall. Daisy Burdock, the inn's cook and waitress, crosses the room carrying a precarious arrangement of bowls and plates. She stops briefly to tease and joke with a regular customer or glance out the window. A sign is posted prominently next to the archway. You also see a wooden menuboard, a polished wooden bar, some wooden stairs, and an open doorway.

Concert

Daerlynn recites:

"Thank you all for coming!"

Daerlynn recites:

"Tonight is something like the 26th or so concert here in Arthe Dale!!"

Daerlynn recites:

"Well, I can't give a huge long introduction about our performer tonight..."

Daerlynn recites:

"All I can say is that she is my personal favorite Bard in allthe lands, and that she is wonderful and incredibly talented...."

Daerlynn recites:

"She performs very well too!"

Daerlynn recites:

"Let's just say... I have no complaints!"

Daerlynn wobbles, looking a bit faint.
Daerlynn wobbles, looking a bit faint.
Daerlynn wobbles, looking a bit faint.
Daerlynn wobbles, looking a bit faint.
Daerlynn giggles.
Daerlynn blushes furiously!

Daerlynn recites:

"Anyway, introducing my love..."

Daerlynn recites:

"Heston Falconsong!"

Heston says, "To set the mood tonight... here's the first sonnet I wrote."
Heston says, "I promised Juliun some bitterness."
Heston winks.

Heston says, "This is a sonnet I call "Backstabbing."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"We were thick as thieves, two twins.
My partner loved me as I loved him.
     Ravashing, pillaging, and debauching widows,
We lived for each other and we lived for sin."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I loved him more than my own dear mother,
I gave all to my devoted brother.
We shared maidens, gold, even my clothes,
In our friendship I was stronger than a lover."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Then the day came where we got caught.
The cursed rubies in our hands were hot.
     Screaming, beaten, confessing all,
So I was captured, while he was sought."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I heard his voice often, but never kind
Laughing, "You never were a friend of mine."

Heston bows.

Heston says, "Now for a love song to make Daerlynn jealous..."
Heston edges away from Daerlynn.
Daerlynn looks at Heston and blushes.

Heston says, "This is my attempt at comedy. "She Who Has Everything But Me," by my lanky, swanky self."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Well, once I wanted to woo a woman
A beautious, virtuous lass (You know me!)
I fell in love with a blue-eyed warmage
And wanted only to bask in her stay
But of course she never noticed my haze
One needed to impress her--Well, I tried!"

Daerlynn says, "grrrrrr..."
Daerlynn smiles sweetly.

Heston smugly says, "Oh yeah, I gave it my all."
Heston flirts with Daerlynn.
Daerlynn flirts with Heston.

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

    "I wrote a poem (*I* wrote a poem!)
     Quite a beautious, virtuous poem
With the naming of many sweet flowers
That I sang to her beneath her window
But she yawned, corrected my poor grammar
And went to bed. Alone. Well...without me."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I bought her chocolates! (Mmm, chocolates).
     Some beautious, virtuous chocolates
     Imported from fearsome northern jungles
She only ate one, and threw the rest down
Said quite boredly, she had tasted better
And went to bed. Alone. Still, without me."

Daerlynn mutters into the air something about good.

Heston tenderly says, "Oh, beautious, virtuous woman!"

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I purchased her a most lovely ball gown
     A beautious, virtuous lovely gown
A black satin, slinky, *expensive* gown
That she called ill-fitting, and showed me pants
She knitted pants! All by herself! Who knew?
She went to bed. Alone. And sent me home."

Daerlynn mutters into the air something about Oh silly, stupid woman who will soon die..

Heston wryly says, "I was thinking of taking up juggling."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I presented her some slimy eel skins
     Beautious, virtuous, slimy eel skins
That I had bought off a forest ranger
She laughed and muttered about poli'zoh
Something quiet that I couldn't quite hear
And then she went to bed. Yes, yes. Again."

Heston tiredly says, "I myself was tired too."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I gave her my grandmother's diamond ring
     A beautious, virtuous diamond ring
She curiously asked, "A magical ring?"
You see, I'd gotten her attention
And she told me all about azurite
Before she went to bed--I left behind."

Heston sheepishly says, "Well, I ran out of money."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I arrived with only my meager self
     My beautious, virtuous, meager self
     My desparate, groveling, meager self
I declared my heart, and she grunted "duh"
But soothed her wit, "Finally, one who learns!"
And took my hand, but no, not there. Be pure!"

Heston playfully says, "I was trying! "

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"She sang a poem to me. A good one!
And skinned me nice poli'zoh pants
     Crafted magical inmera rings
By Idon, she made her own chocolate!
I glowed with beautious, virtuous things
While she went to bed, I gulped, overwhelmed."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

""What can I do?" I cried
Feeling ineffectual as I watched her terrorize
"Oh you beautious, virtuous one," she smiled,
     "Here" she crooned.
     "You can hold my purse."

Heston smugly says, "And yes, yes we did."
Heston bows.

Daerlynn grumbles.
Daerlynn grumbles.
Daerlynn slides a thin steel throwing dagger out of her blue bandolier.
With a flick of her wrist Daerlynn sends the throwing dagger spinning into the air, catching it a moment later by its tip.
Daerlynn mutters into the air something about We will see that virtuous woman....

Heston says, "The next three pieces all tie together."

Heston says, "They're the observations I've made of our lands as I've travelled."

Heston wistfully says, "I am the fiddler of a faenrae heart. I am the reaver's daughter."

Heston says, "I am a bard of the wildest Lord, of wanderlust that brings me here, to sing to you--"

Heston winks.
Heston says, "Of why Poets drink."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I drink the swill 'til its liquor left no blood in my veins.
Thin rum and thick grogg help numb the many pains,
Til' I can sing again of silly loves and swooping cranes
An' make a quick copper that's snatched in the dark of Vorclaf's lanes."

Heston smiles sadly and lifts her sra'ajhh to her chin, drawing her bow across the strings to produce a tavern gig that lifts the tune from its words.

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I sailed as far as I could to the lands across the sea,
Knowing my pirate's soul an' my beckoning heart's decree.
But all I found were sleeping mages, cold and dead they be.
An' solace asked a price greater than cheap ale of me."

Heston ponders and closes her eyes to recapture stillness as the music dances impudently under her fingers.

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"In Theren at the Baron's Table I wrote of knightly lore,
An' heard of gypsies murdering merchants along the Kev'Leor.
Safe behind stone walls and deep moats, Paladins dream'd of war,
An' yet another lad sworn to Jeladric is torn apart by seordamor."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I drink until I can laugh and dance and sing yet again.
An' raise up my bow to the sra'ajhh's calling hymn!
Music burns away what a stein of beer cannot dim--
Then I can smile and sing of heroism at a lad's next whim."

Heston wistfully says, "...and smile and sing again."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"An' I traveled down to Shard to see Her garden fair.
Those diamonds send light a'dancing through sweet mountain air,
Saw stalkers drag small children into sewer dens there.
While Grey markets an' Curios sell bloodied boys and wares."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"When I came back to Crossing and sipped tea at ol' G's Court,
I heard the faint cries of 'Paths who still had compassion of a sort.
One healed a youth destroyed by rats and his elders by the port.
Alone I tried, as I cried, to pen my breaking heart's retort..."

Heston helplessly says, "An' so Bards drink."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Liquor's drowsy taste now consoles me in its hold.
An' so I drink, until I think, my sorrow is drown'd untold,
An' I contain the blackened blood and silvery white gold
Of eleven races in my sra'ajhh's dark, anguish-ed and bold."

Heston smiles shyly and holds the final note on her sra'ajhh, the bow drawing out the keening sound.

Heston bows.

Heston smiles.
Heston rubs her hands together.
Heston says, "This is the only story I'll be telling tonight..."

Heston says, "As I wander as a Bard wanders, I see things. This is what I saw in Shard... "

Heston ponders quietly and settles onto a stool, gathering her thoughts, before looking directly up at you, her striking eyes clear and challenging.

Heston says, "They call Shard the city of diamonds. From the Spine it glimmers like a mirage; the sturdy towers, the delicate gates, the lavish bridges--these are the symbols of civilization, built by a people defying the chaos of the mountains."

Heston says, "I was striding towards the center of the city at dusk, intent on selling the few gems I'd earned clearing a farmer's field of goblins, so that I could take a room at Rose's for the night. The Great Tower led me closer, the candlelight at its highest reaches a shining beacon through the rapidly falling darkness."

Heston shifts in her seat once more, settling herself into the story, leaning forward intently.

Heston says, "I had one foot on the doorstep to the blue shop when I heard a noise behind me. I wanted to ignore it and collect my dues, weary from hunting, but..."

Heston shrugs.
Heston says, "Bardic curiosity drove me to turn."

Heston smiles a tired smile.
Heston says, "I first saw a pair of eyes, staring back into mine. Sentinel Lyle gazed evenly at me from across the street, his eyes capturing mine. When his gaze moved to the scuffle in the center of the street, my eyes followed."

Heston says, "A small young Halfling thief was running up the street from the south, dressed in tattered rags. His skin was pale from sewer life, and his fur was matted with dirt and mud. A street yegg, unlike the elegant locksmiths that tipped amply in the taverns, he ran for dear life, clutching what looked like a copper dokora in a singed and bleeding hand."

Heston says, ""Halt!", a voice cried out stridently from the south."

Heston says, "And the boy did, frozen in place by white holy bonds of magic."

Heston says, "The small boy's victim, a Holy Warrior, strode proudly towards the thief, dressed in gleaming silver-white plate flourished with blue diamonds. He held a forged bastard sword in two hands. The knight's opulence would have even made the Baron blush, but I was oddly, suddenly overtaken with a twinge of fear, and ducked under the awning of the shop. Lyle, too, stepped back into the shadows... watching."

Heston sits up, her clear eyes locked on yours.
Heston says, "Watching."

Heston says, "Without even deigning to retrieve the coin, the knight let his sword fall upon the thief's neck. The little boy's eyes were open wide with terror... as he was split in two."

Heston ponders for a moment, in remembrance.

Heston says, "An eternity of silence passed.. before.. the body crumpled to the ground."

Heston says, "The Paladin searched the body, seemingly disappointed to not find anything of value, and walked on to the north. I looked quickly at Lyle in the dusk. The Sentinel held my gaze for a moment, then shrugged and turned away, disappearing into the city."

Heston pulls out a copper dokora, holding it in her hands... turning it... as she slowly continues.

Heston says, "The last glimmer of sunlight shone down upon the copper coin as it lay ignored in the dirt. Then the street was plunged into darkness. I stayed unmoving until I heard the whispered sounds of thugs snatching the body away. Then I fled as quickly as I could out of the city."

Heston continues to stare at the coin, before raising cold eyes to you.

Heston says, "I go back to Shard, but now the diamond spires seem like castles of tears, monuments of mercy helpless against Chadatru's hand of Justice."

Heston slips the copper coin away with a sigh, ending her recollections.

Flutterbee exclaims, "a toast to Heston!"

A handsome Human with tousled black hair stands up and clears his throat. He raises his glass and says loudly, "To Daisy Burdock, the fairest in the land!". Daisy blushes and curtsies to the man.

Flutterbee exclaims, "ye gods does she know how to spin a tail!"

Heston says, "Daisy supercedes me, as usual."
Heston chuckles.

Heston says, "My bias tells one story...but not all stories."
Heston winks.

Heston says, "Here's a more positive story from our last great war... A special request by Bryn."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

    "Hero of Sorrow's Reach"

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Years seem long ago that Sorrow's War was waged
When men fought bravely as dark Elpalzi raged.
High up in the dark mountains doughty Stone Clan fell,
Cutting off hardy dwarves who's steel had'n admired well.
And gross corpses piled up high on Sorrow's Reach,
Surrounded by armies that no warriors could breach."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Poor travelers too were slaughtered on the Reach.
Traders smuggling aid to the Clan fell into the breach.
From Promado village, from the mines upon the hill,
Knights, monks, and troubadors were ripe for Sorrow's kill.
Soon all had a brother dead, helpless in the squall,
Then Moon Mage Maconaie heard the desparate call."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"The roguish redhead lad was playing on his bones
When he heard a darkness was sweeping through his home.
One man against an army and the risks fearsomely high,
Maconaie knew to save his brothers, he would have to die
And since he had nothing better at all to do that day,
He gave me his all clothes and went naked to the fray."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"And gross corpses piled up high on Sorrow's Reach,
Surrounded by armies that no warriors could breach."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"To death upon Sorrow's Reach, all hope had been lost,
Bodies moaned and wailed against the horrid cost.
Some rotted for weeks, some for days, and some for hours,
'Til a voice's joyful cry made those evil troops cower.
Maconaie raised his arms, pulling moons to the ground,
Then he was revealed and--*Maconaie was struck down!"

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

""Darnit!" he laughed, before he departed away,
And his new body went north once again into the fray.
Now dead mens' families saw his dashing plan,
They began to gather to lend him their brave hand.
A stranger died for them so the least that they could do
Was acknowledge his moongate, and pull the bodies through."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Clerics and 'paths triaged, inspired by his light,
The first corpse slid from the middle of Sorrow's dark night.
Thieves in hiding snatched bodies secretly away
Barbarians stomped right into the middle of the fray
War Mages cast their spells, Bards strummed their magic strings,
Two-score gathered to Mad Maconaie's little scene."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Over twenty bodies were snatched that night under Sorrow's nose
Because of Maconaie's death, back the army drove!
Folks came not from duty but from fresh hope and joy
Sorrow's Reach had been conquered by one wild little boy
There Maconaie left them, surrounded again by hopes
He's heard someone needed rescuing in the darkling copse!"

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Remember on days when you want for a raise or a blade,
How Maconaie stood naked against mighty armies, unafraid
Think as you chat about the new Prince's petty fight,
Who really became a hero on Zoluren's darkest night.
Wonder as you're murdering a citizen you call a leech,
If his brother might have rescued you,
                Up on Sorrow's Reach."

Heston bows.

Heston says, "All right, I said that was my only story, but Daerlynn's requested another, and well..."

Heston says, "She's taking me home."
Heston grins.

Heston says, "My story, my love."

Heston says, "Once upon a time, a black heron was born to the wild flock of Idon's realm. The darkness of her feathers clashed mightily with the haughty pristine white of the other creatures, and Idon was horrified to find a creature of such blackness, void of the light and color of his kind. The god of beauty cast the heron out."

Heston says, "And so she wandered the mortal plane of Elanthia. There were other dark birds, ravens and crows, that were compassionate, and occassionally a shrike swooped in front of her, its red eyes recognizing a Godly sisterling. Still, the black heron felt very lonely, and missed the homeland she had been banished from."

Heston says, "And then she met the king snake."

Heston says, "Its scales were pristine white, the color of snow, the sleek patterns like the delicate skeletons of birds. Upon seeing her, the king snake raised its head, and the heron feared it would strike."

Heston says, "Please don't eat me, kind snake!" The heron cried."

Heston says, "The snake replied, "Oh, no. I was just trying to get a better look. I've never seen a black bird of your kind before.""

Heston says, "The heron relaxed, arching her long neck to study the snake. "I've never seen a snake paler than the summer sky before, either."

Heston says, "They recognized each other as two unique creatures. Then, as misfits of like kind. The gentle king snake told her own story to the black heron."

Heston says, "I was born to a coven of king snakes that lived near a merchant's city on the isles. They protected the larger ones from predators and insects, and in return were favored by the great men of the land. When the elder snakes saw that my ashen skin would not darken, they panicked. "The merchants will see you as an abomination, a curse sent from Peri'el! They will slaughter us all!" So, to protect their own skins, they sent me away."

Heston says, "Before I began my journey, I asked who Peri'el was. They told me she was the God of the Earth. They shook as they spoke. She had created king snakes. Now she lived deep under the earth, and she was mighty. She had the power to lull dragons! The coven was afraid."

Heston says, "I, curious, abandoned, crept to the center of the earth. There, in the deepest shadows, I heard a lullaby. The sweetest music...""

Heston says, "The king snake would not tell the heron any more about her religious experience, but the black heron was already charmed. The pristine white of the king snake's scales reminded her of the swarming beauty of Idon's creatures, and the passion in the king snake's story touched the heron's heart."

Heston says, "The king snake, too, fell in love with the dark heron the color of Peri'el's shadows. The heron's fae gentleness soothed as the melodies of the deep earth. And the king snake sang for the heron."

Heston says, "Overcome, the black heron took the white king snake to the realm of Idon, the source of all passionate beauty. The king snake was enchanted by the swamps where the mist and sunlight played together, creating and recreating the fae creatures. Idon was surprised at the heron's return, but always ripe for a mockery, he came to greet them."

Heston says, "My god," the black heron said. "I have found what you did not give me. True beauty."

Heston says, "And the king snake began to sing the hidden lullabies of Peri'el."

Heston says, "Idon himself was amazed. He welcomed the darkling and the albino into his realm, and they became the most celebrated creatures of his kingdom, inspiring the mortal Bards of their charge with the most elegant fervor and wanderlust that had been seen for a long time."

Heston says, "So remember, when you are cast out...it is only the beginning of your journey."

From somewhere outside comes the faint call of a heron. As quickly as it came, it is gone, leaving only poignant silence in its wake.

Heston smiles and bows.

(Heston regains her gruff and sly exterior, pretending she's not sappy...)

Heston rubs Daerlynn gently.
Heston says, "Here's another song to make her jealous."
Heston grins.

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"On the advice of a friend I went down to Shard.
I had to work blades and gargs weren't too hard.
     I ferociously drew my blade
     And forward the gargoyle bade.
As I laid on thick my charms as a Bard."

(Daerlynn purses her lips.)

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"I had miscalculated my charismatic whims
And soon that gargoyle had me pinned
     I worked on my slice
     I worked on my dice
Until I saw to my surprise that gargoyle grin!"

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Its hard to hit a gargoyle consumed by lust.
I tried to turn down my bardic charm, but I was trussed
     Getting air became a struggle
When the gargoyle wanted to snuggle
So with fear and desparation I parried its thrust."

(Heston starts to mime the parrying and thrusting, but thinks better of it)

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Keeping my wits (and my soul) about me was a race.
If I succumbed to garg passion, I couldn't show my face
When it dragged me to its lair,
     My situation grew graver,
I was pinned between a rock and a hard place!"

Heston winks.

Daerlynn gets a raggedy stuffed gargoyle dressed in a ruffled pink skirt from inside her messenger's satchel.
Heston smiles smugly.
Daerlynn punches a raggedy stuffed gargoyle dressed in a ruffled pink skirt. Big woman!

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Well, what happened? Well, I'm still here!
Though some folks say I tend to be queer...
Well, 'fore that creature of stone
     Could break all my bones
I bought that beast a beer!"

Heston says, "Several. Until that garg fell asleep."

Heston says, "Damn good investment."
Heston casually observes the area.
Heston says, "Bards have many skills."

(Daerlynn glares at her gargoyle.)

Heston bows.
Heston smooches Daerlynn all over her face.
Daerlynn kisses Heston. And she doesn't seem to want to stop.
Heston smiles.

Heston says, "All right, back to the dark tales."
Heston rubs her hands together.

Heston says, "Here's a song I wrote in honor of the horse I haven't gotten yet..."

Heston clears her throat.

Heston says, "The Ahkaal horses are renowned for the spots and patterns of their hides. This is a myth I heard in the howling winds of the Dragon's Spine, where the Mountain Elves reside. "

Heston says, "It is only a myth... "

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Our steeds gallop over the steppes.
     Steel-clad hooves trample lands thin.
With the spirit of Akhaal within us,
We chase stallions across the wind."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"There was an Elven prince too frail to ride,
Jealous of stallions more beautiful and strong
Solid black and gold of unbreakable grace
His hating heart beat twisted and wrong."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"His spirit grew darker, his beauty ever shallow.
The wild ones worshipped who competed with him.
At eight he painted white spots on their hides
But his father simply washed them away."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"The boy studied magic and Bardic lores
Where the dark truths of true beauty lie.
Subverting the music of thundering hooves
To harness the power of a mare's whimpering cry."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"He had sorcery more powerful than horses.
He went to the plains for his final jeer.
His weak shrill voice spilled magic forth
And horses grew white with trembling fear."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"The terror caused a stampede, right to the source.
And ghastly horses trampled the Elf where he stood.
His magic released in agonizing screams
Echoed by the thunder of wild Akhaal hooves."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Now spots forever scar the paints of the plains.
Wild with magic and terrible grace,
Tamed only by Elves of that spirit and blood
Of the beautiful dark youth with the trampled face."

Heston sings in a mezzo-soprano voice:

"Our steeds gallop over the steppes.
     Steel-clad hooves trample lands thin.
With the spirit of Akhhaal within us,
We chase our stallions across the wind"
