Subject Story Writin' Contest (206)

Hello my fellow Olvi!

As I announced in our meeting of 5/28/02, I am opening a contest for all of you Olvi who might have the urge to be creative. Whether it be fiction or poetry, as long as it is Olvi related, now is the time to take quill in hand and compose your entry for the first ever "Olvi Story Writin Contest."

What are the rewards, one might ask? The first reward will be that your book will be published and proudly placed in the Arthe Dale Library. Will there be others rewards you might ask? Of course! Prizes will be awarded to First, Second, and Third place, details on what those prizes will be, will follow.

* Subject matter must be Olvi related, either fiction or poetry. (No historical narratives please, unless it is purely fiction.)

* Minimum word count: 1000

* Maximum word count: 2000

* Utilize a simple text program (Not something like Microsoft Word.) for your book entry.

* Use a plain, ASCII text for submissions. No graphical formatting (Boldface, italics, etc.) (Even semi-colons can cause grief, so please avoid them as well.)

* Align all paragraphs flush left. Line length should be 64 characters, and leave a line between paragraphs. Double space after each sentence.

* Spell check is your friend! Any entry submitted with grammatical and spelling errors may be disqualified.

* Contest is open to all Olvi 5th circle and above as of today's date.

* All submissions must be dated no later than: 8/3/02 (Which will give everyone 1 full month to be creative!)

* Email all submissions as a separate file to DR-MORZY@PLAY.NET, with the words "Olvi Contest" in the subject line of the email. (Only text files will be opened. Any other type of file will be immediately deleted.)

I'm looking forward to reading all of your entries, as I know you'll do our race proud! Good luck to all of you.

Subject A change to the STARE verb. (3)

Hello, all. =)

The races of Elanthia will note that they stare a bit differently, now. A minor change, but one to enjoy nevertheless. Elotheans should keep an extra eye out for an additional change, courtesy of the wonderful GM Tessima. =)

Subject Just a head's up for the book contest. (167)

Hello to all my fellow Olvi -

June has turned into being a rather hectic month, and I'm a little later in sharing the details of the forthcoming book writing contest than I had originally intended.

I will be posting the official rules of the contest the first week of July. The contest will be open the whole month of July, so that will give you plenty of time to write your entries, spell check them, spell check them, and spell check them again.

Please hold off all your questions until you see the rules, and I'll respond then. Glad to see so many of you enjoying the new smokes!

Message Re: Simucon News! (1096)

>> I don't know about anyone else here but I've never heard of the guy.

That too bad. He's one of the top (if not the top) developer on staff. His work with substances is going to revolutionize DR.

>> I've never seen him post anywhere about his position with poison. I've never heard him ask for any input.

Probably because it just got assigned to him and he hasn't done any work with them yet. When he does begin that work, I'm sure he'll be by.

>> Maybe it'd be a good idea for him to get in touch with us instead of sitting on his hands.

Maybe it would be a good idea to understand the situation before making assumptions. The work that GM Fial has done over the last two years is nothing short of breathtaking and will finally be seen by players before too much longer. To remotely insinuate he has been sitting on his hands is insulting.

To have GM Fial in charge of something you want done well and want done right is very much a blessing. You will someday be happy about the day you heard he was placed in charge of poisons.

>> Why do we need more boxes? If the GM staff is undermanned then I suggest they prioritize the work. I don't think a new round of boxes is anything that should be getting attention before stealing, Thief bonus, and a ton of other things.

Perhaps the people who can code new boxes are not the same people that can redefine the Thief bonus, rewrite stealing, and / or the ton of other things. SGM Maelona has addressed that point to near extinction (I guess it isn't sinking in).

Subject Olvi SimuCon reporter here (grin) (153)

First and foremost... Fial isn't the olvi guru... he's the olvi god.

Very tired olvi here, so will make this short... er, brief.

SimuCon 2002 was a total blast.

Overview : Party, ale, old friends, grog, new friends, more ale, meeting with the olvi god, tog grog, long trip home (grin)

Specific to olvi, I found out from the man himself, that olvi rule. Of course we knew this but soon others will be more aware.

1) I asked (again...grin) about getting that saint bernard complete with saddle and keg. Answer... The horse guys are looking at smaller mounts for the cool races, so it is very possible. Soim might even get that silly pig he wants. (snicker)

2) An official Olvi history will be coming into print.

3) Olvi will see their clans and be able to join them. One in Arthe, one in Riverhaven... can't think at the moment where others might be.

- as part of the clan system we will be electing a thain, mayor and sheriff. (Anyone think Soim wants that job?)

4) Smoke images and teaching them are being looked at for bugs. (Aren't they cool?!)

5) The olvi language is real. I saw a very long list of words.

6) Wooly will be opening a tobacco shop in Arthe Dale! Of course he can't run it, he's too dingy (grin) so he may still be running around the Dale getting lost.

7) Did I mention how great Fial is?

Taffei ~ one tired but happy olvi

p.s. Hey Mykk, did you see me on the GS3 telecast? I just HAD to invade to let em know that we really do have more fun over here.

p.s.s. catch me after a couple days of sleep and I'll see if I can remember more (grin)

Subject Enhancements to the Smoke Images (70)

Tonight I released enhancements to the Tobacco Smoke Image system, greatly expanding on it, and giving races besides Halflings the opportunity to learn and make images.

The smoke verb has been expanded to give some additional info.

Smoke help will list many of the commands in the smoking system.

Olvi (Halflings) will be able to teach images, to any willing student of any race. Olvi will still remain the masters of smoke images and will be the only ones able to teach teachable images.

There is a skill involved with images with five levels of images and six levels of skill. The sixth level allows for the teaching of the skill. The best a non-Olvi can hope to obtain is 3rd level, 2nd level for Skra and Prydaen, 1st level for Rakash in moonskin. Once you reach your highest skill level no more experience is awarded. Each smoke image has its own experience counter.

All Olvi will start out knowing the current smoke images, at different levels of experience. Once they reach the master teacher level, they will be able to instruct others in how to perform the image.

A smoke image will last a little longer now, based on your skill in the image. You will see the image in the room description, and be able to interact with it.

Starting in July, I hope to release one new image a month that will be taught by different Olvi NPCs, depending on the image and background.

I know you will enjoy them.

Olvi Fial

PS. Disclaimer; Do not attempt to make images while consuming beverages, I will not be responsible for soaked keyboards or messy monitors. ;-)

Subject Meeting change again... :-( (54)

I hate to do this again, but the Olvi meeting is postponed again.

New date and time is May 28, at 9:30 pm ET in the Arthe Hollow Inn.

Something came up with work, and I can not be sure I would be able to make it on the 22nd. Have to go out of town next week, and dial up with my laptop is iffy from a hotel room. And since that weekend is Memorial Weekend, I think it is best to hold the meeting on the 28th.

See you there.

My thanks as well. And my thanks also to the beautiful GM Tessima who called me "esteemed"! I walked around with a smile on my face all day.

See you all the 18th. I suppose I shall have to bring the tarts.

Yep. The only exception is the name of the halfling language, Olvio. (which we are working on, but not high on the to do list)

Subject Olvi Meet (18)

I'll be having a meeting sometime in May to introduce Olvi to some new things, and a general socialization meet. It will be in Arthe Dale, same place as last time.

I'll announce date and time later, but it looks like it will be around the 3rd week of May.

But as of tonight, I have finally bid my final farewell to Elanthia.

" Character Deletion Results
Phangor Glorrey has been deleted. "

This was the only way I could ensure that I will not return to DR. It's been a big part of my life for the 6 years I played, but I must move on, I had to do this.

And yes, those of you who are wondering, everything Phangor ever had is now gone.

I will not post a long goodbye, as most people know I've been gone for a while now. But this is now final.

Thank you all for the memories.

Believe it or not, I look to be back indeed, for those that remember me, and GM Loriene is letting me get my memories back by working on some things in Aesry Surlaenis'a that were never completed. The Inn of the Crystal Wave is one.

I was wondering (outside of a general concept which is already established) if there are things that any of you citizens or visitors which you wish the inn would had. Special room considerations, for example, etc. (I already have one room with shorter and softer sleeping mats for Halflings)

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to see what folks may be dreaming of, as I resurrect my own dreams along the way. Have fun, make me some suggestions, but of course nothing is promised, etc. etc.

Best wishes, Alnilam
