Olvi Smoking Page

UPDATE: 6/13/02

Okay, basically Fial has given us more information than I have time to format to my liking right now, and he knows it too, damnit!  Heh.  Well, the following 2 links will have to do until I get some real free time.

Fial Smoking 2.01

Mingold's Smoke Image Compendium

UPDATE: 7/7/02  New smoke shape spotted

>In rapid succession, Fial puffs out a series of lines that form an unfinished web. A smoky spider on the edge of the web quickly completes it, then crawls to the center awaiting its prey.

>In rapid succession, Fial puffs out a series of lines that form an unfinished web which seems to entangle Fizzia in its strands. A smoky spider quickly completes the web, then crawls atop her to feast on its prey.

I'm not positive who knows the "web" image.  I think it could be just the half-dozen Olvi who were partying in the Arthe Hollow Inn at the time, which would be:  Taelina, Taffei, Teminesca, Fizzia, and Mykk, and maybe Rascalt and Melindrha.

Speaking of Fizzia, has anyone seen hers?

>Blowing out some smoke, Fizzia creates three small smoke rings which two settle around her arm like bracelets, the third on one of her fingers. The rings seem to sparkle with precious jewels.

(UPDATE 1/10/02:  Griffina's player sent me the info on the Warrior Mage cantrip for lighting smokables.  Thanks Griffina!  This page could use to be organized, but the info is here if you're looking for it.  ps. Griffina, how about the view from someone else in the room?)

Halflings of Elanthia are the undisputed masters of smoking. Don't let any "real-life" hang-ups with smoking get in the way of appreciating this fun bit of roleplay in a fantasy environment. There are Olvi who don't smoke, not a problem, and I have Mykk pay attention to where and when and who before lighting up.

Enough of that, let's get to the good stuff!  Did I mention "undisputed masters"?  I'll start with the basics, then show off our advanced moves.

Smokables in DR include cigars and tobacco.  Cigars can be smoked by themselves, but tobacco needs to be put in a pipe.  First trick is getting the smokable lit.

Lighting a cigar or tobacco with magic:
By Griffina O'Cavanaugh

We War Mages have these things called Cantrips, as you well know. The one used here is called Burning Touch. As you can see it lights my finger allowing me to then ignite another object.

prep cantrip burning touch

You are now prepared to cast your cantrip.

gesture my cigar

You touch a Pantel spice cigar with a glowing finger, and it quickly catches fire.

The burning cigar glows brighter until it begins to burn steadily.

Lighting a cigar or tobacco with a lighter:

There is a fairly rare device in game that is the functional equivalent of a lighter.  They are/were only available on the Dunshade Quest, and since you only were able to choose one item from the treasure room at the end of the quest, most people did not choose a lighter when they had other options like weapons and armor.  Later, as people started going on the quest multiple times, the lighter became a more popular pick, and I've seen them for sale by players for over 75 platinum.

I am a lucky owner of one of these, from my one and only quest, which Mykk went on with Griffina by the way.  It works like this:

>get cigar from my satchel
You get a Pantel spice cigar from inside your purple tapestry satchel.
>get dragon from my satchel
You get a small silver dragon from inside your purple tapestry satchel.
>point my dragon at my cigar
>
You quickly flick the switch on the back of the dragon, pointing it at a Pantel spice cigar as flames shoot out the creature's mouth, making the cigar quickly catch fire.

To the observer:

Mykk gets a Pantel spice cigar from inside his purple tapestry satchel.
>
Mykk gets a small silver dragon from inside his purple tapestry satchel.
>
Mykk points his silver dragon at a Pantel spice cigar and a flame shoots from the creature's mouth, making the cigar quickly catch fire.

Other lighter verbs:

>point my dragon at sommelier
You flick the switch on the back of your dragon quickly, causing it to spout a stream of flames at Sommelier's abdomen! He dodges just in time, escaping injury.
(Mykk points his silver dragon directly at your abdomen, and before you can blink, a bright flame shoots out the creature's mouth at you. You dodge just in time, escaping injury.)

>turn my dragon
You turn your dragon over to the back of your hand and weave it over each of your fingers, showing off your dexterity.
(Mykk flips his silver dragon over to the back of his hand and weaves it over each of his fingers.)

>tap my dragon
You tap lightly on the side of your silver dragon, creating an intricate rhythm.
(Mykk taps his silver dragon, creating an intricate rhythm.)
